How long will tomato seeds keep?
Comments (4)There are recorded instances of 50 year old seed being germinated under ideal conditions, germination of 15-20 year old seed when frozen is fairly common, and whenever this question comes up on the Tomato forum and the Seed Saving forum here there are many reports of 5 year old seed or more being used. Of course proper storage - cool and dry - will determine longevity. Personally I frequently use 5-8 year old tomato and other common vegetable seeds. Comments (11)I'm just finishing the batch that I grew two summers ago (habaneros and cayenne). I had them in the freezer all this time and they're fine. Don't expect the crunch of a fresh one, but I've been using them in salsas and sauces and my family is still around exclaiming how hot they still are. They're definitely a good storage commodity. Love em. Be well, Elliot...See MoreHow long do peppers keep in fridge?
Comments (4)What you want to do is kill off any mold spores on the surface of the chile. then keep it dry in the refrig. You might try a dip in some hydrogen peroxide to kill the mold spores. Of course a simple water wash will help wash some off. Serenade is an organic that is used in the garden for mold. But wash it off before eating. it is not poisonous but might leave a haze if you use the powder form. Commercial operations use a form of hydrogen peroxide like Zero Tolerance or a grapefruit seed extract that is expensive to purchase. Both of these are considered safe for food. You can research this problem on lettuce that is prepackaged after getting ready for a salad. The bags of lettuce. they have to go through this process to extend shelf life. If I were to try this experiment I would dip in HP for maybe a minute and wash off with water and dry and store in refrig. individually wrapped peppers would keep mold from spreading and would extend the life. The other way to try is to dip in HP then dry. Wash before eating with some water. Once mold is growing you have a problem. mold spores are oxidized by the HP but mold itself is very difficult to kill. Think of the mold as the mushroom. you kill a spore. but you do not wash away a mushroom and its roots running deep in the plant....See MoreHow Long Will Tomato Plants Keep Producing?
Comments (2)Technically, as long as they have sufficient water and nutrients and don't get rootbound in a container then indeterminate varieties will produce until they are overly damaged or killed by pests or disease (or frosts). But the amount of production slows and the size and quality may decline with time. Cutting them back can help IF fully healthy or you can grow clones from cuttings of healthy plant to use as replacements or acquire new plants for best results in the following season.
