Help With Exterior Remodeling

The trim on our house needs to be replaced and we'd like to remove the Tudor style since the house isn't really a true Tudor. We plan to use Hardie siding but are stuck on the color due to the fact that there is so much brown in the current house (roof, window trim, etc). The bricks are multi colored and we are open to painting them. We probably would be open to replacing the window trim if that isn't too pricey but not the roof as it has many years left. Our ideal change would be white siding on top and white painted brick but that won't work with the brown roof. Any ideas are welcome. Thank you.

Well I took your description and did a very rough photoshop of what it would look like ... in the shades of white... I have a few other ideas... But it would need to include some elevation work... etc..

Or maybe some wood in this shade of grey...

What's the deal with the low window? Is that a sunken living room? Agree about taking Tudor-ish wood down and painting garage doors the color of house you choose or one shade down. I think that low window needs to be addressed . Or, perhapes moving the shrubs in front of that window will help with making it look less disproportioned. Two glass doors would help with the proportion at the entry because of the glass above the door...both reflections would bring the eye up a bit and to that area. I would paint the brick the color of the house, right now it's being a bit of an attention hog. One's eye goes there first when it should go to the entry.

What is your budget? Do you need space in your living room or do you want to bump out because you think it will help curb appeal? I like the porch, I would keep it if you don't need the space. The house has good bones. Your fireplace facade is rustic so I would take your cues from that. I would paint your brick one of the mid tone grays from the fireplace and I think that will go with your roof. I would think about getting a new, more substantial front door and adding some door trim to go along with your new porch railing and columns. Greyish weathered cedar would make a nice looking porch. Chunky orangey cedar is going to be harder to pull off with the brick and the fireplace and the roof. Are you keeping the front landscaping? It looks good in the photo, just needs some trimming up.

after the chimney is gone, widen the porch in that direction. replace narrow windows with a picture window or other large window centered on that side. if you could afford it bring that recessed area out with an addition so its even with the rest.

You have a lovely home and I am sure you will love it when finished. I am someone who likes older homes to embrace their authentic style. Your new roof color is going to be informing your decision on siding color. Here are some inspirational photos. My biggest problem with your home is the lack of distinctive front entry. Have you considered creating a more interesting front facade? Even some awnings might help create some depth and dimension! Can you post actual current photos please?

Thank you MSDG! Very helpful! What do you think about leaving the brick alone and putting a cream or tan horizontal siding on top? Would that be better? Thanks again!!!

don't think the tan siding will do the trick it will start to look very BLAH... and all one color... Brick has some applicability if you choose another style ....

Not sure what you mean...I meant keeping the dark brick as is (not painting or changing the color) and putting a lighter colored siding on top (realizing that we would still have to change all of the trim around the doors and around the windows). Thanks!

I do not think your idea with keeping the brick if your only idea is lighter colored slat board siding... this elevation needs some work to get it to the quality feel you are referring to... Good Luck ..
