no scale.. but it reminds me of barlett ...

if so.. hard as rocks .. lol.. dad would leave them on the picnic table for a couple months.. and they would finish ripening off the tree ... fond memories of late october... listening to college football games in the yard.. and eating cold pears off the table ....

one other memory ... there was a 60 foot tree at grandmas.. you didnt want to be standing under it.. when these meteors were falling off the tree ... lol ... true proof.. gravity can hurt ...

If you want to ripen pears or peaches quickly, put them in a brown paper bag loosely closed on window sill. Check daily

I'd suggest thinning now- just go in and remove everything that points downward or upward from the laterals (scaffold branches that are attached to the trunk). That will help limit regrowth in the spring. You'll be amazed at how much green you'll have lying on the ground when you're done! If the scaffolds have developed branches that are growing into competition for the branch from which they are growing -that's more than about 1/3 the diameter of the scaffold- cut those competitive branches off where they attach. Leave the pencil-sized branches that grow horizontally off of your main scaffolds- those should become fruiting wood. Expect to continue thinning for the next few weeks as new growth tries to replace what you removed. It takes a while to develop a clear picture of how it all works (I'm certainly still figuring it out) but the tree will forgive a good number of mistakes.

If this is a 'named' grafted variety of pear, it's grafted onto a rootstock - which could be a callery(think Bradford) seedling, P.communis seedling, or one of the clonal OHxF rootstocks. Your volunteer may be just a root sucker from whatever rootstock is under your fruiting pear; could grow up to be an ornamental callery pear producing tiny little inedible(to humans) pears, or fruits of unknown quality if it's actually a seedling of your own pear tree. Or... just as likely, it's a volunteer callery seedling, courtesy of birds feeding on those fruits and distributing the seeds - it's becoming a nuisance invasive pest in many parts of the country. If it is indeed a seedling, you may be waiting 15 years or more for this seedling of your pear to grow through its juvenile period and begin bearing fruits... that may or may not be very good. In most cases, we'd recommend grafting/budding to a good, known variety... but, all named-vareities originated as a seedling - some by chance, some by purposeful crossing of good varieties(but those may have had many siblings that didn't make the grade). You could even get a jump on things by grafting or t-budding this seedling now, then transplanting it during the dormant season next fall/winter.

Well....after looking at more pictures online and talking to my wife, I think we've determined a Natchez variety will be too much for our front yard. The height doesn't worry me so much....it's the wide canopy spread. I'm afraid it will make the ground around it too shaded, and will kill off the Bermuda grass. This happened near our pear tree, and since the ground is already sloping down, it has caused erosion issues. So now I'm steering more towards an upright growing Crape.....I have been looking at Tuscarora or Miami....I am also looking at Sarah's Favorite. It's so hard to tell what information to trust, because if I look at 10 different sites describing the different varieties of Crape Myrtles, none of them will be consistent as far as how tall/wide a tree will get. I had one site say Sarah's Favorite doesn't shed bark, but others say it does. I really had my heart set on a white flowering variety, but it seems like Natchez or Sarah's Favorite are my only choices for the size of tree I want.....I can't seem to find Byer's White anywhere online.

the beauty of the table in shade in fall .. was.. who has a bag to hold 100 of them.. and who needs that many ripe at one time ...

these were probably true root cellar fruit ... where you could store them in the low constant temps underground.. long into the winter ... keep in mind.. in my MI ... by oct.. outdoor temps are in the 50s ... so if you are in warmer zones.. the whole outdoor process may not work as i suggest ...

and you have to respect a fruit that can fall 10 or 20 feet .. bounce off the ground.. and not be bruised .. lol...

mom used to throw some into apple pies ... bazinga ... or homemade applesauce ....

Orchard fruit cultivars are best identified in person, when multiple samples of mature fruits can be cut open to allowing viewing, smelling and tasting of their interiors.
