Tools and Chemicals needed to remove cat urine
Comments (33)My previous roommate's cat peed on the rug my mom bought me as a housewarming gift. It's a 3'x4' dark red shag-style rug. My roommate cleaned it with Nature's Miracle when it first happened, but after a day or so of still smelling the urine, we rolled the rug up and stuck it in the garage (where it sat for 3 or so months). Well, I just recently moved to New Orleans (I left the roommate and her damn cat behind!!) and would love to use my comfy carpet on my new hardwood floors. Problem is, as soon as I unrolled it I could smell the pee -- it stunk up my entire house in literally minutes! I've read through several related threads on this forum and most have been about wall-to-wall carpeting with padding, etc. rather than just an area rug. I'm not sure if I can throw the rug into an industrial laundry mat washer or use a steam cleaner on it since it is a shag-style rug... any ideas? I know I could just toss the rug and save myself the headache, stink, and money -- but I would really prefer to save it if at all possible! Thanks in advance :)...See MoreGetting cat smell out of oriental rug
Comments (30)Brutus unanswered the difference between simple pee accidents from neutered or spayed animals and the pee/spray deposited by unfixed animals. Fixed-animal urine stink is bad, but depending on the length of time and the underlying material sometimes you can get it out. But I have washed cat towels from the bedding of an uneutered feral I took in last fall perhaps two or three dozen times and I can still smell the pee/spray stink. And I use a Euro f/l washing machine and can, and do, go to 205F with all kinds of additives. And nautrally I started when these were fresh sprayings and treated them with several different enzymes and urine smell removing treaments. (BTW, I find a product called Get Serious to be better than Nature's Miracle and Petzyme. All available at Petsmart-type places.) Anyway, if the rug smells of simple cat urine odor and it has been untreated for awhile, I doubt you could get it out because you might have to use chemicals (enzymes, for instance that are damaging to natural woolf fibers) or such vigorous cleaning that you would damage the rug. But if you wanted to take the chance you could try. However if the smells are from unneutered animals, I wouldn't even bring it to my house to try. I do feral cat rescue and am totally over the yuck factor of cat pee, but the smell of it still drives me bats. HTH, Molly~...See MoreJute or sisal rug with cats
Comments (9)I had one. Once. For about five minutes before one of the cats upchucked on it and no mater what I tried it would not come clean. All our area rugs are now woven polypropylene. They hose clean and not even red wine stains them. I know this because my hubby clipped the bottom of a wine glass on the edge of the tall table I had just placed at the side of his recliner and it spilled all over our brand new rug. Luckily I had been working on a piece of furniture in the sunroom and tucked the shower curtain liner under the rug, ran tap water over the stain and watched it disappear....See MoreMy Cat Peed on my Rug and it's ruined HELP!
Comments (22)Several years ago I did a lot of research on cleaning urine. I was not satisfied with Nature's Miracle, or 3 other pet stain cleaners I had tried. The urine causes smells when bacteria, in favorable humid/moist conditions, feed on crystals in the urine. The crystals have a very sharp structure that attaches to surfaces and sticks forever. I found this awesome product WORKS: http://www.scoe10x.com/ It uses probiotics (beneficial bacteria) to completely digest the urine, and the odor-causing bacteria deprived of food then die. I used it as directed on a mattress that was soaked in pee. A wonderful quality organic latex mattress. I completely soaked the mattress and wrapped it in plastic to give the probiotics time to work all through the mattress, then dried it with an industrial fan blowing over it. It completely eliminated the stains and the smell, even when the room is very humid (from the humidifier, which helps control cough). The product does not need to be rinsed and leaves no residue. Also, everyone, especially pet owners, should own a black light. A major challenge with cleaning pet stains is that there is much more urine than you think, that you can't see. With the black light, you will see it. (Because of the black light, I could see that Nature's Miracle wasn't working.) Buy a lot more SCOE10X cleaner than you think you need, because you need to soak every urine crystal. SCOE10X salvaged this expensive organic latex mattress and left it completely fresh and clean. I'm planning to tear out all of our wall-to-wall carpet soon, so I'm not wasting money or energy cleaning the old pet accidents out of it, but I'm planning to use my black light to find where urine has soaked into the subfloor and SCOE10X it away before installing wood floors! I have no association with the company, just a happy customer. Too bad we can't readily get it at any pet store, because every pet owner needs it....See MoreRelated Professionals
