These plants range from 1 to 4 inches tall and are growing like weeds. I grew them from seed and now have them in 6 inch cups. I only want plant for plant so here's what I'd like to trade for: Cotton Candy Begonia and any type of cane begonia Red Velvet Elvis Iris any type of citrus bred to be a potted plant Poppies, especially Himalyan Blue, but no common types any RED Sempervivums Red Texas Hibiscus (I have a white one) Check out my wants list in case I've left anything out or tempt me. Bigger is better with containers. You can be sure the pot it came in is too small, though, because shipping large containers is expensive. Tomatoes are tough and usually won't suffer much shock from being repotted (even when they're large). Just be careful with the stem and don't disturb the roots too much and you should be fine. Contrary to the prior recommendation, I would only fill the new container up to the level so that the root ball will be sitting at the proper height. Once the plant is in the new container, hold it up and pack soil around the sides. Then water it in and repeat until it's settled. For fertilizer, get a tomato fertilizer with calcium and other micronutrients. Apply at the label rate. Vegetables in containers need complete fertilizers. I'm curious about my mix. I have two Early Girl plants from Lowe's that were transplanted into 5 gallon buckets 3 days ago. I'm using a mix of sphagnum peat moss and miracle gro potting soil. I mixed in the peat moss to help drainage. But my leaves at the bottom are yellowing. I don't know if I have overwatered, or under watered. An important piece is that I'm using a 2 bucket system. The bottom bucket received the water, and a wicking cup soaks it up into the top bucket, drilled for drainage. I learned this system from globalbuckets.org i pre wet the mix when I put it in the bucket. I top watered and bottom watered the first two days to make sure it was fully wet. Maybe too much water? I'm in zone 9a with temps of 80-88 for these first 3 days since they've been planted. Full sun. Too much sun?

Sounds as if your planter is over crowded and it definitely isn't getting enough sun - 6 hours minimum of good direct sun for tomatoes. As to water, I'd say it isn't getting enough. All those plants are competing for the 1 gallon of water and that isn't enough for a 20 gallon container. It is best to water it deeply and thoroughly LESS often (till water runs out of the base of the planter) rather than in little bits of water daily. Shallow daily waterings promote shallow surface roots and that's where your yellowing leaves are coming from. If it is really hot you may still have to water daily but water till it comes out the bottom. And mulch the soil well around the plants to help retain moisture. All those plants in there are also competing for nutrients and it needs feeding. I'd remove the herbs as they won't like the amount of fertilizer the tomato plant needs but it's up to you. Liquid fertilizer of your choice used at 1/2 strength of the label directions once a week works good for container plants. Lastly, check the bottoms of all your existing fruit for blossom end rot - common in a stressed plant - and if any have it pitch them so the plant won't be wasting energy it needs to recover trying to ripen them.
