Advice on 20 inch small gas range

I have a tiny kitchen and my options are limited for the 20 inch ranges. I would love to have stainless steel appliances and Avanti, Premier and Summit appear to be some of the only brands that make 20 inch ranges. Has anyone had any experience with these and do they have a recommendation for which brand to go with? Here is what I was considering:

I don't know if you searched this forum before posting your question, but this topic has come up before. Perhaps those threads have gone to The Great Beyond. :-)

We had experience with a stainless-steel 20" Avanti in a rental unit. It looked nice. It had lots of features (sealed burners, light, etc.). But it was not very good as a range. The burners were fairly weak. The oven would not hold larger baking pans. And the broiler on ours was just off the floor (where I would rather store pots and pans than reach down for hot food).

The Avanti linked to here clearly is not the performer even the other two ranges are. The Premier and Summit look like they share the same innards. Note that one is a slide-in (which introduces some installation issues of its own).

For me it would come down to whether you actually enjoy cooking. If you do, I'd quit thinking about the Avanti if you can at all afford one of the other two. The Avanti will get the job done for someone who wants to fry an occasional egg and heat soup. But it will frustrate a real cook every time they switch on a burner.

Can you go up to 24"? Do you cook? I ask this question because if you don't then poor performers may be ok.

1. The NXR fits large pots easily 2. Not sure what is considered "thin", I am sure it is thinner than the old 1950's O'Keffee and Merritt's but everything today is thin compared to older models. I know this NXR weighs in at over 300#, it feels like a tank to me. The box weighed 360# when it came in and took us over an hour and a half to get it into the house. 4. "electronics in front"? you mean the knobs/controls? The NXR is virtually electronics free, just a convection fan button and light switch. The convection fan is fairly quiet, not what I would consider loud anyway. Center of burner to back on the NXR is 6 1/8" and easily accommodates a 12" pot. I prefer to use larger pots on these burners actually, most all my pots are between 10-14" they work better on these wide burners. 7. I do not personally know because I have as yet not needed any customer service. but NXR uses the same company "ADCO" which is the same service company used by Liebherr and Wolf and Garland. I imagine like ALL service company's for large appliance manufacturers today it is going to be hit & miss depending on your geographical location and who it is you get on the phone, regardless of what brand you go with. So far we have been very pleased with ours, we have the older model (NRG3001)which is no longer available. IMO there isn't another range that even comes close for under $2000. If money is no object then you have all kinds of choices equally as good or better. for $2000 or less the NXR is the best choice.

Adding gas range 36 in to a space previously filled by 60 inch range

Karen you know what’d be easier? Replacing a 60” range with a 60” range. I’m guessing you‘re not doing that because they cost as much as a Ford Focus. Don’t worry about centering your 36” range, you could add a 24” cabinet on one side and top it with an induction surface. Two 30” would really only work if you put a gas range next to, say, an induction range. Or you went higher end and had mixed elements (griddles and grills) on each. Otherwise I think two of the same exact range would look a little odd.

Thank you for the info. I have a very very tiny kitchen and without taking down walls I am not able to fit a larger range unless I am willing to forgo a dishwasher which I would like to keep. I've attached a photo for reference.

@steve_o I did try searching threads on this forum, but I couldn't find what I was looking for. I will do some digging again. Thank you for your feedback on Avanti though, it is good to hear from someone who has had experience with that range.

@homepro01 I'm not a serious chef, but I do a fair amount of cooking. I roast a fair amount and sautee.

I have some ideas but can you give me the exact measurement of the dishwasher? What is your budget for making changes? Are you in NYC? Is the current unit an all gas unit? Do you have access to electricity for a range or only gas?

@homepro01 - I'm not sure if I have access to electricity, but I would say only gas to keep it safe. The appliances are so old it's hard to get an exact measurement from researching online, but from what I have measured here is what I have:

Range: 20"W x 27"D x 38.5"H

Dishwasher: 18"W x 34.5"H x ~26"D

I am in NYC and I have been working with a firm that has already priced out a kitchen re-do. Labor I want to keep it at 15-20K. Materials will have to be added to that.
