Dead Head question w/ pics
Comments (13)If my earlier post sounding curt, I didn't mean for it to. The 'oft-recommended' suggestion to deadhead has nothing to do with the flower structure somehow impeding growth as it does not; saying otherwise could be confusing to those people newly growing these shrubs. Rhododendrons and azaleas will grow normally if deadheaded or not deadheaded, although the appearance of the plant looks decidely more messy with the browned flowers and later the seed caps still on it. Rhodendendrons are prodigious seed setters, and the formation of quantities of seed take much of the energy the plant would otherwise utilize in forming flower buds for the next year. Failure to deadhead will lead to heavy flowering every other year with few blooms in between, especially on younger rhododendrons. Deadheading can also be good sanitation. Wilted flower petals can possibly harbor fungi such as petal blight....See MoreNikko Blue mop head dead?
Comments (3)My Nikko Blue barely made it through the drought. But, you must know that it is a well-established plant, having been in the ground long before I moved into my home. I live very close to Crown Heights. It is producing growth from the base of the plant, but none on the stems as it should. Same thing with other hydrangeas I have in the back yard. This is no fault of yours. All of the hydrangeas suffered thru the winter drought. My azaleas suffered as well. My beautiful pink azalea in front died. It has been in the ground for well over 10 years. It was an evergreen, and while it retained its evergreen growth over the winter, as soon as I began to water it in spring, it died. It may come back if I prune back the dead stems. I don't know yet. Lots of things suffered. My double daffodils did not bloom this year. Just foliage. Best thing for you to do, is to go at it again, and purchase a new Nikko Blue to start over with. Hydrangeas really suffer from lack of water. Hydra - means water. I can empathize with you because it's tough to lose a plant especially with sentimental value attached to it. But, you can succeed with it. Just do it again. Susan...See MoreDead Plumeria... ð
Comments (7)I'm SO sorry that happened, I know it's frustrating. I love your spirit though like Laura said!!! Congrats on all the other amazing plants you grow, it sounds like you do good work over there. My plants have actually been outside since mid-March...there have been a couple of cold spells but nothing they shouldn't have been able to live through. I even periodically squeeze the branches, all has seemed great, no problems at all. Well, yesterday I walked by my 3 yr old Pauahi Ali'i and saw BLACK OOZE OF DEATH! What the what???!!! Unless it somehow got cold damage, the only other thing I can think of started with an inflo. When it was spent I cut off most of it but it had kind of merged / grew with an existing branch...I think it rotted from there possibly?! I don't know, it seemed to happen really fast but I probably didn't see the signs until it was waaaay too late. I tried to cut the other branch to see if I can root it but it didn't have much sap, I think the whole thing may have tanked on me. I told Russ and he said, "Well, you still have like 75 other ones" HAHAHA! Not quite the same but also not one that broke my heart either. Keep it up and please keep us posted on your new babies!!!...See MoreDead heading, and some observations..
Comments (14)Sorry Sparaxis.................Hi Judy...I must say your roses look Fab!!!!I do hope that my roses are resting, I am not having much success with any at present. I am just getting the occasional bud now which quickly gets cut off for a vase. But I will admit most have had either three or four flushes since the Spring except Seduction it just goes on and on, a wonderful rose even if it does fade to white and ends its life in a few short days. Maybe I am expecting too much after all it is their first season.....Great Pic.....Cheers..MM....See Morekcandmilo
