Forgive me Ken, but am very new to growing yews. How can I tell if it has budded out? It has little round brownish colored buds on it but I don't know if these are new or if they were there before. When I do a soil test, what type of soil is best for yew? I have clay soil but it has been ammended with compost. I won't fertilize it. We've had lots and lots of rain for the past few months. Believe me, our spring hasn't even started yet. During the month of April, we've seen lots of rain, wind, hail and the temperature for this time of year is lower than normal. Thanks Ken.

Thank you for your reply Ken. I never thought that it might be the house/windows that radiate heat towards the shrubs. I put the insulated windows in the same time I planted. The funny thing is that there are the same type widows on the other side of the house, those Boxwoods aren't affected. I have screens that I can put on, I just like the look without them. I guess I water them somewhat as needed, no schedule. I got them 6 months ago and noticed this about 3 months back. Do you have a suggestion of a full/tall 5-6' shrub that grows fast? I'd like to put something where the Yew's were. Is there another time beside the Spring when planting is recommended?

ALL conifers brown inside the plant ... no conifer holds its needles forever ... both are complicated by transplant ... as long as the outside remains green you are in good shape ... the bigger the transplant.. the harder it is on the plant ... yours are really big ... your only issue is proper watering ... it has to have water ... where the roots were cut off for transplant... throughout the entire root ball YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE WHO WILL BE ABLE TO FIND OUT... take a small trowel.. and dig down there.. and see if it is damp at least halfway down the root ball .. if not.. water more .. slowly .. if damp .. do not water again until it nearly dries ... and that answers your specific question ... in my experience.. overwatering involves yellowing of the entire plant.. then it dies and browns ... it would NOT be an interior only issue ... MOST conifers prefer dry feet ... they need water.. but dont want to stand in water.. get digging.. and perfect your knowledge of how water moves through your soil.. and you will be successful good luck ken

My 2â ... Take an old knife and run it around the inside of the pot to loosen the dirt from the sides of the pot. Then carefully push on the bottom of the pot to push the whole works out. You might need to turn it upside down and let gravity work for you. You can then use the knife to separate each seedling as carefully as you can. It might help to work on a table while sitting in a chair. Have your new pots ready with planting mix, make a depression in the mix with your fingers, place the plant in the hole and push the dirt in around it. After watering, it might be a good idea to keep them out of hot sun or total shade until you can see that they're growing OK.
