A couple of pictures from today
I thought I had lost my beautiful Rainbow's End. It came down with Southern Blight. One by one, each and every petiole came out of the crown with no effort at all, its end all covered in ugly goo.
I spoke with Chris at Hallson's, and he advised me to remove the mulch on top and the top 1" layer of soil beneath, and then treat with a fungicide. I used Bayer's Advanced fungicide, pouring it in a 12" radius all around the crown and on the sidewalk where I had temporarily placed the diseased petioles.
I really thought it was the end for this plant, as it lost everything above ground. But then...new leaves began to emerge until it made up for its lost ground.

6 years agoAnd here are two more hosta pictures. The little green cage seen is my own creation, to thwart the champions of chutzpah in my garden, those sassy squirrels from eating up all the Sluggo pellets I put out to kill SLUGS. As soon as I'd put it out, sparrows and squirrels would swoop in to help themselves. The squirrels chewed through the plastic baskets I placed over the Sluggo pellets. So this time, it was WAR. I bought a roll of green vinyl clad 1/2" hardware cloth and cut it up into large squares. Snipping away about an inch from the 4 corners, I formed a cage. I wound the cut ends of the wire over each other to seal the corners, then used an 18" garden support thrust through the middle to anchor the cage to the ground. Then I sprinkled more Sluggo pellets within its protective confines. Unless the squirrels can lift up the cage, the pellets are safe.

Comments (14)Paul, They are beauties! Here are some from the past two weeks when my southwest hosta bed was in full bloom. I think that they look pretty good considering early emergence, late frost, hail (twice), and lots of bugs this summer. Gold Regal in bloom. L to R: Carnival, Jester, Golden Tiara, Emerald Tiara, Janet, another Golden Tiara, and Shade Fanfare. Turning the corner, same bed from another angle, with Shade Fanfare at center, and in the background (right) a big ventricosa, a fotunei Hyacinthina, and a couple of August Moons. Emerald Tiara in bloom Montana Macrophylla bloom. Golden Tiara blooms. Blue Cadet blooming. Jester blooms. Comments (4)May be some of the last with the flush of roses, but they're still beatiful. The daylillies are also, I really like the centers of these. I have a dark mauve that I could not get a good pic of no matter how many times I took a pic of it. Then I got the bright idea to go out early morn before the sun hits it. Perfect pic and it shows the color of the rose, exactly:) I just thought I'd share that with you especially on a rose the color of Fragrant Cloud. Comments (4)The trouble with lazy days here is that they usually happen when we get a rare "cool" front in the midst of the heat. I just want to sit on the porch and take it all in, not run myself ragged trying to catch up before the heat returns. Lazy girl I guess...........My favorite is Blackjack Cherry. I do something similar with Sluggo. I put the Sluggo in a bottlecap, then cover it with a clay saucer to keep the Sluggo drier longer. This is then covered with a dollar-store basket and held down with stakes.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoCowboy, I don't know what the "slug bells" cost, but I could make up a whole bunch of them for less than $30---the price of a couple of really nice hostas.
This is a sink drain, selling at Home Depot for $1.98. There is a screw on the bottom of the rubber stopper that you can remove, to give you a central hole. If the holes are too big, lay a scrap of nylon screening over them to keep the Sluggo from falling through.
This is an 18" plant support from Home Depot. It costs $1.17. It would be easy to slide the sink drain basket halfway up the length of this and then slide a holed rubber stopper or cork (if you're a wine drinker, save those corks!) up underneath that to support the drain basket.
Finally, get some cheap but pretty large coffee mugs at a yard sale or a clearance at a drug store or grocery store. You can often find some for like 50 cents apiece, certainly no more than a dollar.
Hang that open side down over the wire spiral at the top of the plant support. Voila, your own cheapie version of a "Slug Bell". If you like the earthy look, substitute a 4" diameter clay plant pot from Home Depot (78 cents) for the coffee mug. Total cost = a shade over $5 vs. $18 for those Slug Bells.
