WANTED: Adopt Newbies Butterflies/Pollinators
Comments (9)Cilantro Basil Lemon Balm Mints Chamomile I saw hummingbirds drinking nectar from tomato flowers! they practically check every flower in my garden, circling Echinacea right now. I don't see how this might reduce pesticide use. Last year we had a huge insecticide here, a landscaping company sprayed linden trees right when they were blooming, killed tons of bumblebees. My previous neighbor asked the city to exterminate a bee hive just because her yippee dogs would be chased by them. And the city did and a few weeks later a new bee colony moved in and died again. Here is a link that might be useful: bumblebee death...See Moremonarda bad idea for the butterfly garden?
Comments (6)drsoidberg, the kinds of wasps that (I believe) the others are talking about are not parasitoids, but predators. For example, paper wasps and mud daubers will snatch a caterpillar, sting to paralyze it, then carry it off to the nest where it's sealed inside with an egg from the wasp. Wasp larvae will then be able to feed on live (though sedated) caterpiller until ready to emerge as an adult. Yellow jackets, too, are predators and will feed directly on caterpillars and other insects. The much smaller parasitic wasps are the ones that lay their eggs on or under the skin of feeding caterpillars. Their larvae feed on the living caterpillar from the inside out, emerging only when ready to fly away as adults. In my gardens, the hummingbirds really enjoy the monarda, and I'd not remove it primarily because of that. But, a diversity of insects is healthy, too....See MoreDoes anyone garden for pollinators?
Comments (13)Thank you to all of you for your wonderful photos and input on this topic! Because of your input and ideas, I have ordered a few more plants for late summer/fall planting that I hope will be established enough by next season to provide food for pollinators: Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' (the perennial one) Silphium perfoliatum Hardy hibiscus (said to be attractive to both bees and hummers) Echinops 'Blue Glow' Solidago 'Fireworks' (I already have 'Little Lemon') Calamintha nepeta Nepeta 'Joanna Reed' (said to be sterile and constantly blooming, just like Six Hills Giant) Aster 'Edo Murazaki' Aster 'Raydon's Favorite' (to add to Bluebird, Fanny, and October Skies) Vitex 'Abbeville Blue' Agastache 'Blue Fortune' (I already have this but it can't hurt to add a couple more!) Another Helenium 'Mardi Gras' I am going to try to grow the Eryngium mentioned above by seed next year. Thank you all again for the great observations and inspiration!...See MoreAny suggestions on how to start a pollinator host plant garden?
Comments (5)Hudson, the only pollinating insects that require host plants in order to complete their lifecycle are moths, butterflies, skippers, etc. Their larvae devour the host plants until they reach a preordained size at which point they pupate in a cocoon or chrysalis, emerging as an adult moth, butterfly, etc. Does that make sense? Other pollinators are simply nectar and pollen feeders, visiting flowering plants pretty indiscriminately to collect what they need. It's our job to avoid chemicals of all kinds if our intent is to foster a healthy insect population....See Moredocmom_gw
