Skylight as only light source?
Comments (10)Thanks for the replies so far. :) I wish I had both a skylight and the south windows in my kitchen! Love that pic with all the plants in the skylight. I'm now pondering getting a few plants to hang from one skylight. :) Too bad the skylights in this house are about half the width of the one in the picture. Looks like my kitchen and utility rooms are going to turn in to jungles in the new house. Not that I mind, of course...we'll see what the rest of the family thinks. I'm mostly bummed that my office will not be south facing - it has a small .6m x 1.25m north window and not even a skylight. Perhaps I'll try my hand at ferns - other than a bird's nest fern and one I never found the name to that I've now had for a few years I'm usually good at killing ferns for some reason....See Morecounter height window bumpout, how deep is too deep?
Comments (16)Lol, at the belly flop mental image! Ok, if I have to ask my DH or contractor to measure my armspan in relation to the kitchen project, they are really going to lose it, they already think I am crazy enough! I get it though, and its a totally practical concern. (Little Fishies, do you have irregularly long arms?!) My contractor did say he thinks they can frame it in to get it a bit less deep, the carpenter will know more. Justmake it, your window is beautiful. Your cabinets look great too. Are you going to have casing around the bump out? Are you putting uppers next to the bump out? I'm trying to decide how much room I need to leave next to where the bump out starts before I start a cabinet. I'm going to check that out on other posts showing these windows. Little Fishies thanks for posting that. When it comes time to order I'm sure it will be helpful. Thanks again!...See MoreSlightly OT: Skylight help needed!
Comments (9)Your property taxes should not be affected by a new roof, with or without skylights, as the county will not reassess the value of your home based on that one improvement. You already have a roof, and the new one is just replacing the existing one, not adding something you didn't have before. There is no added value in a replacement roof, and although it can boost what is called the "effective age" of your home---that is rarely enough by itself to change the assessed value of your house. I would say your contractor's reluctance to install the skylights indicates he doesn't have much experience with them. Ask him for references of people for whom he has installed skylights before using him, and go see the finished jobs if possible. You may want a different roofing contractor....See MoreSkylights in 8ft ceiling?
Comments (33)I always wonder why bedroom natural light is so important. I spend all my time except for sleeping in the rest of the house not my bedroom . I happen to like a nice darker bedroom for sleep and so have never felt like i want to lay in bed in the morning staring at the light through a skylight.I for sure get them in living spces with poor natural light....See Morebardzil
