Is the job going to be inspected? In NC, code is 18" from the center to the toilet to any other obstruction. If you have a 33" span, you'll end up with 16 1/2". If you have to pull a permit, then the smaller space might get caught and you might be made to change it. Otherwise, I'd say it was OK.

They make no unless they are outside tha rest of the bathroom, who wants to use the toilet while someone in brushing their teeth , really just such a silly idea IMO. If hubby wants a separate WC then redo the flootr plan to do what the Europeans do and that is a completely separate room.

Pat is right. I don't like to share a bathroom with someone who's using the john, either.

Mine measures 2' 5 1/2". I've never thought it too narrow, but there is no door.

Thanks simstress! I just had that same thought last night as well, to ditch the hallway linen closet. I did a rough sketch of what I was thinking, but I think we'd loose a bit of master closet space to get us there.

Men seem to have fixations on privacy (or is it smell containment?) while pooping. It sort of cracks me up.

The women might find it annoying to have the toilet so far away from any storage where they might keep supplies -- I sure would! Maybe you can squeeze a tiny cupboard in there with a trash can.

Also, I just have to say I'm squicked by having to open a door before washing my hands. ugh.

If you go with the lower of your two diagrams, I'd reverse the swing of the bathroom door so you don't have to walk around it to go into the rest of the room. And maybe you can put a padded ottoman (with storage?) under the window... (Or you can slide the WC down to include the window, squeezing a linen closet into the corner where the toilet used to be. But I understand that's a loss of natural light in the bathroom and a partial enclosing of the shower. Just throwing it out there...)

So true acm! I totally agree about storage. I had thought maybe to do a small hidden cabinet between studs to keep some extra toilet paper, etc. in could be a good idea. I had a good picture of it, but can't seem to find now.

The biggest downfall of the second diagram is definitely the loss of storage. I pushed the idea of the WC in front of the window, but husband vetoed the loss of all natural light. This would give the room to add some sort of closet within the master bath too. Plus the toilet essentially stays in the same place it is today, so moving the stack would be less.

Think about doing a pocket door on the toilet area. I like your first plan with the commode being below the vanity. The last one has the door opening directly on the side of the commode, not a good idea.

Or, even "bar room" swinging doors, or even 2 door set, cause while that window will give light, it will also help to aerate the whole area, those FRESH air electric vents don't work nearly as fast as a window(this is only if your window opens up). If you plan to live there till you retire, anyone using a walker will be destined to a bed side toilet...the equipment one uses will not fit thru a single door way. 2.5 feet W is really tight, if you ever have to work on the infrastructure like the floor seal replacement, and if you never have to bend a weak back or
knee, over to clean under and behind the tank, or try to maneuver a
broom in the area, or don't mind if your knees hit the paper roll, or
your elbows. All reasons why that is a bit narrow ...maybe, put some kind of shelving on the wall above the toilet tank. Make
it from the ceiling down to about 5 feet give or take inches, above the floor.
You have to have room for a trash container on the floor, and paper
roll, just part of living. Maybe even, keep the inside wall 12 inches shorter than
the ceiling, at least you can get day light in there? And have a nice place to park some succulent plants that thrive well in that environment and cleanse the air too.. Also, have you thought of maybe
consider cutting 18 to 24 inches into the MBR closet for 4 feet long and to get 3 feet width, of the water closet? if that outside wall is usable for the toilet to be on.... to gain
the width you need which also makes wider shelving above the tank, too. OR, You might ask if the wall can be narrower than standard width, use the 2x4s sideways??which a pocket door will not work well on, since it is just cosmetic visual anyways? That would gain you a several precious inches on the right and left side of the toilet..And that could create the need for your sinks to be seperate, one near the window, and one opposite the bath entry, which makes it easier to have one TALLER than the other, for him versus yours, & might even give you a spot for a sit down vanity with a makeup mirror to the right between the window, sink, vanity, toilet closet wall.. Don't short yourself on electrical outlets by yours, or his vanity either.. Pretty common that is often an overlooked detail...........Maybe, don't wall up that shower...keep the entry width as flexible as possible, and as level to the floor as possible. You don't want your shower to be a dark pit if you are placing tile on that wall to the right of your current sketch. Use bubble glass so light can get through, for whatever minimal wall you might want? You want to be able to see who is entering that bath door. LOL..No matter what, you have alot of great options and any will be soo nice!

Red, you know how those exhaust fans got to be a thing? When they started using hollow-core doors for bathrooms they realized that certain sounds were audible. They put in fans to mask that sound, not to actually freshen the air. Create a problem, then solve it, I guess

OMG! That is too small for anyone to be comfortable! I don't care what is "allowed", it's just too small for comfort. Barely enough room to get in there and turn around, let alone do your business! "just say no" to a water closet at all!

My idea of the perfect master suite is entirely separate baths, maybe a shared shower...... His has vanity and toilet. Mine has tub, vanity and toilet. The shower is in the very generous middle with linen closet and the cleaning lady comes every day...: ) I want a tv and fireplace over the tub. That's all.

Yes, the working repairs a toilet can cause, and really, if you work full time, how much time does one share a space anyways? He goes to work before I do. I get ready to go out before he comes in to do so, if we are going somewhere. Keep it close to a window, for sure if possible and glad to hear that I am not the only one who thinks an exhaust fan is a waste of installation and money. A dollop of pine sol into the tank after or during...LOL will hide most everything...but you gotta have more room than your average coffin. LOL Really ...cause you will want to move around a bit, likely? LOL This is getting funny. But it is all so TRUE! :D

We have an enclosed toilet with a door, and it is 32" wide which works just fine. Mind you, it has a fairly high ceiling and two clerestory windows to give it light and a feeling of space. It'd feel a lot more cramped if it weren't for the natural light.

I'm 6 feet tall and slim/average. Holding my arms tight against my body, I'm 22" wide, 15" at the hips (I'd never measured myself before like that). That would leave me less than 4" on each side to maneuver, with my arms tight against me. Claustrophobic. And no clearance for performing bodily functions. You'll be painting those walls often. Just sayin'.

I think using a bit of the width of that MBR Closet, for the toilet closet, will add enough inches if they place the toilet on the exterior wall, to have a 36 inch wide by 4 ft long area with a 30 inch door that opens OUT into the space, tho 2 doors 15 or maybe 18 inches wide that meet in the center, would be less intrusive into the room, and hinges that swing one in and one out, might work as well as a pocket door, which won't work well at that width and length...painted a light pigment shade, and put some shelving above the toilet tank, either open shelving, or a cabinet painted the same color as the walls..

But they would have to know their preferences for sinks and vanity set up to vary a bit from what they have discussed, perhaps.
