I've always heard that Bt is the solution. Or kittens (they chase the moths and eat them) You can also do "minister of death" patrol and squash the little yellow eggs on the undersides of the leaves. Planting very early helps too -- since kole crops are frost hardy, you can plant early (I sometimes plant seedlings the first week of April in Zone 5, and cover with some AG fleece until things warm up a little). Probably too late to start seedlings from seed now for a really early start, but maybe you can find seedlings to buy at the end of March (I sometimes drive to a slightly warmer area--as in south or lower elevation-- to get seedlings as early as I want them) If you use netting, obviously it has to be very small openings, and no gaps. Those moths will find any little slit to get through -- I've watched them! I've been known to go running around my yard with a butterfly net catching the moths. I don't recommend this, as more moths just fly in, and it looks very silly. Good luck-- I hope it works for you this year! Elisa

Under 'normal' (whatevertheheckTHATis) conditions, we would consider these little crustaceans relatively harmless. However, I'd worry about their presence in your container, since they have no where else to 'graze'. They will very happily feed on new roots, tender foliage, and even fruits and veggies. That fact that they were shipped to you by this nursery in Florida tells me that their housekeeping chores have been left undone. And that the nursery inspectors haven't been doing a very good job! You should call them and complain sternly. Here's what I would do. Depot your banana to see if there is a large hidden population in the bottom of the pot. (I learned that lesson the hard way.) If so, you can get rid of a bunch manually. Food grade diatomaceous earth will be your friend for the management of sow/pill bugs in containers. Sprinkle a layer on top of the soil, and inside the pan or saucer you have your container sitting on. After a couple of weeks, you shouldn't see any more activity.

Could all you and paranoids p-l-e-a-s-e READ what the original poster has CLEARLY stated. These are T-I-N-Y, yea MINISCULE!!! While we don't have Termites this far north I have seem lots of them in the South. We DO have Carpenter Ants. BOTH of these species are HUGE in comparison. I also suffer these little MICRO-bugs barely over a quarter-inch in length with wings looking unlike any ant or termite when folded despite the huge discrepancy in size. As the original poster has indicated they appear out of nowhere, rarely if ever actually FLY and DIE almost as quickly as they appear. They are, however,annoying and make one wonder what is that causes them to appear, in our case in swarms but only in one of our two bathrooms. They are too small to photograph without the aid of an expensive MACRO-lens. I'D REALLY APPRECIATE AN ACCURATE RESPONSE TO THIS QUESTION as to-date the are DEAD WRONG. BTW.... Malathion !!!!! You've GOT to be joking or have a DEATH WISH!!!

There was just a lengthy discussion on the butterfly form about this caterpillar. Schizura concinna - Red-humped Caterpillar These are moth larvae. I would remove them all and discard.
