The eclispe was something else for sure!! I really enjoyed it . It was eerie here hearing silence except for crickets or cicadas !

The eclipse was amazing. I went to Wy to see totality and was it ever worth it. Lilyfinch, you were in "the zone", correct? My brother went to Tn to get the total experience and I thought of you, although I don't know if you were anywhere nearby.

Vapor , we were just outside of it . Got to see the whole thing but not as dark as downtown Nashville. It got dim and shadowy though ! It was so neat. How far did you have to travel ?

Well, quite a ways, actually from Cincinnati! However, we went to Denver and made it a family event. : ) It's not too far from there and we made great timing going up the morning of.. getting back was not so direct and we had to detour through Nebraska! Since I wasn't driving I didn't mind and it was wonderful seeing scott's bluff? (I'll have to look up the proper name.) Yeah for cheap flights.

Of course, all my roses decided to put on their midge-free show while I was away. : ( A few are still going, but I really wanted to see Bolero full on gorgeous instead of one bloom at a time.

Wow vapor Denver! That's amazing and I'm sure so so beautiful. I'd love to visit someday . Sorry you misssd your round of blooms !! Lucky you should have fall flush soon. I'm actually on my way to Cincinnati now ! We are driving tonite to wake up and go to the zoo with our little girl . Then back on the road to visit family in Pittsburgh. And I also am missing out , on 7 or 8 canes of earth angel loaded with buds!! Unreal. Pretty petals mentioned they open slowly so maybe all will not be lost.

Omg! I'm just a few minutes from the zoo! Next time you'll have to stop by if things are in a bit better order. Kids love this place as it has an old-fashioned laundry shoot and lots of nooks and crannies.

'Dakota Redwing' makes shapely, richly scented, dark burgundy blooms, but they don't exceed 4 inches.

This is a wonderful rose, Paul, and I'm glad that RVR finally got it into their sales this year. I've attached a photo of an early bloom of my young plant this spring, and so far it's settled in nicely in a protected sunny spot of my yard. Mine was closer to the burgundy red than the purple tones Va Jo showed, but I'm very happy with the rose. It can have small blooms if it keeps putting out these deeply saturated colors!

I just love the dusky dark red highlights of this particular bloom, though being a young plant it may not be typical of the blooms it will have when it's older.

Cynthia, it's great to hear that it's hardy for you. OT, you live in a beautiful state, but I can only imagine the difficulty in growing roses there!

Hello vaporvac I would say the rose was extremely fragrant for sure. One of my strongest fragrances so far. Lovely bloom.

Hi Cynthia, mine definitely has purple undertones. I would say a closer description would be a dark violet color on the outside petals and a fade to burgundy in the middle petals. I do have this in a bit of shade to try and preserve the darker coloring. I love this rose's pigment saturation, beautiful! Yours looks extremely heathly too. Lovely job!

Vaporvac - I actually don't know if Dakota Redwing will overwinter yet in my zone 5, since it's newly planted this spring. I've given it my most protected and warmest spot in the hopes it will, but our weather isn't negotiable and some outstanding roses just won't thrive for us here. Here's hoping though!

This is the first Summer, vapor, so I don't know much yet. Seems to be an upright grower. I'm eager to see it next Spring!

It is really the rounded shrub at the bottom with the tall shoot now flowering on top at the moment. Next year, I will probably prune down a bit and talk to it about filling out.

Its a very upright shrub, not a climber. I think you'd have a hard time getting this plant to emulate a true climber.

Thank you. I've read the climbing habit mentioned in a couple of places. Perhaps that just meant it grew tall and upright similar to Aloha? Anyway, I want it. : )

I got my first bloom of Dakota Redwing yesterday! Looking forward to more!

DW is a shade darker than the pic shows and more of a burgundy red. I originally planted this rose in a bad spot and it never grew. I dug it up, put it in a pot, and within a couple of months it transformed into a very healthy rose.

Mine is 4 ft tall by 2 ft wide after a couple of years from a band. Mine is upright self supporting and in full sun. It is along a retaining wall with poor soil or I bet it would be larger.

Dakota Redwing has grown very well in San Marcos, TX. The tall shrub form has reached 6’ and has been healthy.

My new rose Dakota Redwing. Love the color. I don’t see any thorns either. So far no fragrance but some roses need to mature first.

I have wanted this rose for years but don't know why I'm not on the waiting list! Your pictures may turn the tied for me on this 1! Just make magnificent!

update: Dakota Redwing has very consistent fragrance this year that is a med-light old-rose-fruity. i have never seen a hint of brick coloring in any bloom. They are always red-black or red-purpurple.

This rose has always been at the top of my list. I believe RV is the only place that carries it to my knowledge. I'm too afraid to order it and then find it the wrong thing 2 years down the road. I guess I'll eventually have to go for it because every time I see it I fall in love all over again. Especially now that I hear it has consistent fragrance!

@Dingo2001 - Z5 Chicagoland As far as I know there are zone 5 growers who have this rose, and ive not heard any reports of it being less than hardy. i see no reason to think it wouldn’t do well in zone 5.

The plant I showed above didn't survive my zone 5 Nebraska winter, but I've discovered since then that better feeding in the growing season helps them survive better. I have roses that I report to be not hardy in my zone that actually might be OK. It gives me incentive to go back and try more of Paul's wonderful roses (beyond the once-bloomers that do fabulously well in my zone). The ones that have tea roses in their ancestry seem to be less hardy for me.
