History on Strangely Named Roses?
Comments (38)Thanks Kippy! That was planted just before Arena went out of business. I'd bought a Reve 'd Or sent out by Ashdown and it turned out to be Renae, which the lawn guy girdled and killed with the weed whacker. It couldn't grow back as it was budded. I wanted Rosarium Uetersen, but no one had it other than Arena, who was only in Paso Robles at the time, operating their local nursery. It cost me $43 for the three gallon plant and shipping for that rose! Thankfully, it grew beautifully. Other than the severe prickles, I really like the rose. I'd often wondered how anyone raised anything from it as in high heat, there are no sexual parts, everything being transformed into petals. It wasn't until I saw it at a Ventura County Rose Society event years ago, I discovered that in a mild climate, instead of being full pompoms of Peter Max, Dayglo, neon coral, it's a softer, more pastel colored, semi double flower with a center chock full of stamen and golden pollen. Jeri identified it for me as I honestly didn't recognize it. Be forewarned, it is another which would much rather flower than grow. If you want it to develop quickly, it will require disbudding to push the cane growth, but once it does, it can be downright spectacular. This one is budded and it required a season or two to begin covering that wall. An own root one is even slower. I rooted a piece from this plant for the homeowner's daughter's Stevenson Ranch garden. It's been in the ground a year now and isn't two feet tall yet. Kim...See MoreAnyone want to help me pick out a name for a girl?
Comments (72)I'm a dork. For a moment I couldn't figure out what was so funny about Cox. Why did tishtoshnm get it and I didn't? Ooooohhhhhh. Got it :)! I had suggested the name Arwen and DH said no. He's a die-hard Lord of the Rings fan since childhood. Such a pretty name. Bronwyn (fair breast and dark hair) was a name that came up regularly as she was a character in a book that DH read as a kid. Just weren't sold on it though. We were literally still deciding up until I was wheeled in for my C-section. We said 'No - it's going to be Eleri - we've thought about it too long'. When she came out DH said 'Honey - she has fair skin and dark hair'. I wanted to strangle him. Anele - you got it! The kid is 5 and one of our friends still calls him Glocklin. 'He's not a gun' we keep teling her. He was on meds when he was a baby and CVS was HORRIBLE at getting his name right on the script. Our last name is Todd so guess where it always ended up? I finally gave up on them because I was tired of telling them over and over that Todd is his LAST name not his first and to fix it....See MoreSomeone knows (or have some idea about) the name of this Old Rose?
Comments (43)Nik, I do think it's too soon to tell much about such an immature plant; especially without any close-up photos of leaves, buds, thorns, etc. I did suggest 'Rose Edouard', but I meant that to be a starting place for exploration, certainly not as a definitive ID. I wondered if the rose 'Palmyre' might be called that because at one point that was a scion that didn't survive. 'Rose Edouard' and 'Céline' are two popular Bourbon rootstocks that often survived the roses grafted onto them, and early descriptions of 'RE' and 'Céline' both seem like good candidates. The HMF photos for both roses seem to me to not match up too well with the early references, but others may disagree. 'Céline', incidentally, was described early on as both a Hybrid Bourbon and a Hybrid China. I believe that William Paul started out calling her a Bourbon or Hybrid Bourbon, but then began calling her a Hybrid Chinese. Virginia...See MoreWhat's behind your rooms' names?
Comments (31)If I have a need to mention it (maybe by saying I repainted it or assigning rooms to overnight guests), the main guest room is still Carly's room. Carly lived here before I bought the house (20+ years ago), she was the only girl with 3-4 brothers, and was given the largest (non-master) bedroom. The room was overwhelming pink when we moved in. I guess the brothers were all stuffed into the other (painted white) bedrooms. Maybe she was oldest, and the only girl, and rank hath its privileges? It seemed so wasteful to me that she had all that space while others double or tripled up. We knocked out a wall between the room FKA "the front room" and the kitchen. It's now just the kitchen. The downstairs office was turned into the laundry room. An upstairs bedroom became the office. The smallest bedroom is the little junk room. The room is little, the amount of junk, sadly, is not....See Morerobin98
