Remodeling Design Dilemma

stair color versus hardwood floor color

Help! My stairs and railings are are stained Gunstock (balusters are white) and I want to put in darker hardwood floors both upstairs and down (deep bronze). The darker grains in the stairs match the deep bronze color quite well. Do I need to have my stairs exactly match the floors? I do not want the expense and I plan to have a runner to tie it all together, Is this a decorating mistake? Many Thanks!

PS: most pictures I see with mixed stain colors are with darker steps and lighter floors. This would be the opposite.

I think having the stairs a different color, especially when you're redoing both the upper and lower levels, would stick out. I would recommend trying to re-stain the stairs to match the darker color floors (be warned that dark wood floors will show everything BTW).

However, if you don't want the expense right now then I would save up for it. Not sure if you can re-stain your stairs or if you'll have to replace them, but if you have to replace them buy some extra wood when you redo your flooring for future use so that you don't run into the problem of having no match.

Personally, I don't think it's necessary for you handrails to match your floor. Nice wood floors are sort of like bluejeans, in that they usually work well with other things. My handrails are a beautiful decorative blond wood, and they have never matched my floor. However, if your handrails/stairs are a major focal point of your room, you may feel that they should match to unify the space. In any case, it's your house and you should do whatever you think you'd like best!

When it comes to hardwood, trends are something to ignore! Why? Because hardwood is pretty much a lifetime purchase, and unless yours is damaged in some way, you're probably not going to replace it. So, light wood vs. dark wood, wide planks vs. narrow planks -- that stuff's all going to come and go. With that in mind -- as well as the very real concerns about cleaning dark wood -- I'll vote for a nice, neutral midtone every time. Not too much contrast, not too red, and (unless it's a beach house) not too pale. I think this is the wood that's most likely to give you good service and stand the test of time.

Thank you HerrProfessorDoktor, I am glad you are letting others know about the issues you are having. It is too bad you regret the dark, perhaps you could restain them lighter in the future? I am very fortunate as I have had dark hard wood floors in my last house and plan to install them again in this house. I love the look and had no regrets last time with care so I think I will be okay. However, I do think it is wise of you to post as there are others who may not know the challenges of dark hardwood floors looking pristine. instead of posting that listing, just post the pictures you need help with The ceilings are beautiful! The tile, not so much. what kind of furnishings do you have? what's your style? are you planning on keeping the stairway as is? (I switch out to something cooler looking This black w/the wood treads, and this wood floor, would look perfect w/your style home and the wood ceilings. these are all done w/wood flooring. (with updated staircase) you'd want to get a tone that goes w/your ceiling wood tone.
