Duchesse de Montebello or Felicite Parmentier: Which one?
Comments (8)I have both and I love them. I don't think I could part between the two roses. Having said that, DdM growth habit is more discipline, more feminine and beautiful than Felicite Parmentier. DdM is thornless whereas Felicite Parmentier is armed with sharp thorns. In my opinion, a rose without thorns is not really a rose, right? But then, too many thorns remind me of roses you tend to find in abandon farmhouses or cementrey. DdM leaves look very airy. When they turn ugly, just pull them off and new feather like leaves will form. Felicite Parmentier - has more crinkly leaves. Both have SMALL flowers..I prefer Felicite Parmentier flowers over DdM because they smell nice and look romantic and they last a tad bit longer than DdM. I just don't like FP thorns and floppy growth habit The only downside is, they only bloom once a year...most of the time, they stay green and healthy. As I mentioned, when the leaves turn ugly (hardy), just pull them off and new ones will merge out. It's really hard to choose: one which is very popular due to the scent(Felicite Parmentier) and the other which is hardy grown by gardeners (Duchess de Montebello) is almost a thornless rose....See MoreIs this Duchesse de Montebello?
Comments (8)Olga, I do have a young Rosa Mundi. When I purchased what turned out to be DdeM I had forgotten I already had a RM purchased last year at the Celebration of Old Roses. She's getting ready to bloom now. I normally am not fond of "striped" roses but RM just seems so historically important. I really shouldn't be able to grow Gallicas being on the CA coast but I think because I'm part shade gardening and the fog gets so chilly that the roses get a "dormancy" of sorts. Gallica officinalis is blooming right now and has faithfully bloomed since purchased a number of years ago. I also have Assemblage des Beautes, Complicata, Alain Blanchard and Tuscany Superb plus a found purple Gallica....See MoreMy Duchesse de Brabant: healthy bush but sad blooms
Comments (7)I had similar question about my Duchesse de Brabant earlier this year. The buds looked similar to yours, though they were larger, but they wouldn't open. I thought it was botrytis, but the advice I got was that it was balling because the buds were not slimy or moldy. If yours are not slimy then it's balling and I was advised like you here just to remove the buds. All is fine now and new buds are already starting to form. Hope this helps....See MoreDuchesse de Brabant
Comments (14)Yep, both of mine were slow starters. Now I have a new test of patience-- Dr. Grill. Looks like it'll be one of those which grows sideways at first. And William R Smith even slower; in fact I may go ahead and put him in the ground to see if he likes that better. OTOH I am impressed with G. Nabonnand which has grown quickly, alarmingly so. I thought I'd allowed a LOT of space but he will need every inch....See Moremariannese
