Will kitchen will be too plain? But don't want to go overboard
Comments (12)Thanks again. I am still not sure, of course! I really love antique lights. The one I'm looking at doesn't seem quite so fussy, I guess because it's old and weathered. I am considering other options, yes on eBay. Usually the hanging fixtures are used under a table or something,. This room has neither table, nor bar, nor island. pcjs - I've seen lots of shades like these, but no fixtures-only auctions in my searches! I don't dislike the schoolhouse ones, they just seem so expensive for something so plain. I have been looking at ebay, and the schoolhouse ones tend to go for more $$, I think, because they are currently very popular. Igloochic - I always wanted to tell you how much I love your lighting! I love old lights and need one for my dining room. I hope you catch that thread when I get a picture to post. I also really like that picture in the mini-bath - the cats in the tree - very charming!...See MoreWhat do you do with gifts (decorative) you don't like?
Comments (34)My mother is one of those people who loves to give gifts, but unfortunately, has no sense of what the other person likes. She orders junk out cheap catalogs, re-gifts (for instance, a make-up case where an eyeshadow or two was used), or wraps up prizes she won at bridge tournaments (keychains or BBQ tools marked "Delta Dealin' Regionals"). She is well-to-do, (maybe because she doesn't spend much on presents? ha) so she's not giving inexpensive items out of necessity. She just doesn't get it. Christmas is tricky--but my family chuckles. (My husband got a Humane Society calendar this year, the one they send for free if you've donated. He also received a plastic Thomas Kincaid corkboard/keyholder thing in a busted box that he immediately took to a "Dirty Santa" party.) But then I am left with boxes saying "As Seen on TV!," useless kitchen gadgets, hideous plastic decorative items and heavy sense of guilt for wanting to get rid of it all. "Gosh, it may not be much, but she chose it with love and wrapped it with me in mind. I can't just put it in a yard sale." I was wringing my hands over my quandary, as my closets slowly filled with unwanted items ("but my MOTHER gave me this!"), when a wise friend had a talk with me. She reminded me that when a gift is given to me, it is now mine to do whatever I like with it. It is not Mom's, with strings attached or say-so about what should be done with it. It is MINE. I own it and I have the authority to decide where it goes. And it is perfectly okay if I think it should be donated to Goodwill and be enjoyed by someone else who might love it and think they found a treasure, instead of sitting unopened and disliked in my closet. So I no longer feel bad about "recycling" her unwanted presents. The only time I've ever spoken to her about the issue was when I had to gently ask her not to give me clothes anymore, since her taste was so different than mine. Now I thank her And sometimes she does hit the mark and I am delighted by her gift. You cannot control someone else's desire to spend money on your presents. They enjoy shopping for you and they like thinking they found the ideal gift, even if it's expensive. Of course, if you don't like it, it makes you feel bad that they invested in it, but every so often you might get something you want and then the cost doesn't bother you, right? I think you're being very gracious about trying to decorate with this item to spare your mother's feelings. But it's not up to her what you do with it, because she transferred ownership when she gave it to you....See MoreMy curtains don't make me HAPPY
Comments (49)Your cabinet with the mirrored doors is super cool and it gives me an idea for one I've been unhappy with. I think I now know what to do to make it work. Always love your rooms and was also happy to read about your JCP shade. I've been playing with some shades too and that may be the fix I want. I never go into Penneys anymore even though they are very close to my house. Will check it out. The wall would be fine if it wasn't yours. I don't know how else to say it. We all have stuff where we make do or just don't get the decorating quite right but choose to live with it. I would be disappointed if you chose to live with it. I hope some of the ideas thrown out here now will make it right. Your DH will never know the difference, but your eye will always find those drapes annoying if you don't. Palimpsest....I just caught an older thread where you posted on Pink and showed the other side of that same bedroom with the deep pink pillow in an otherwise masculine bedroom. I thought that was genius. Now, this side of the room I see and it rocks too. Lovely. Great job. Red...See MoreHelp Pls, Don't Want Kitchen Curtain... But Want Something?
Comments (33)premier, the window isn't as small as it looks in the photo I posted. Not really an expert at taking digital photos. budge1, looks like someone found your example - and I like it. I am looking on the interet to find some material I like. Not that I need a sewing project now, but chances of finding the colors I want already made is probably very slim. I think a lot of little things wouldn't be good either - either just one teal or aqua clock or a valance. dekr8 - are those your curtains? Did you make them or do they come already made up? If you made them, did you use a pattern? I really like that idea. I can almost picture some brown and aqua valance hanging from those pegs - I like the use of pegs - different than most valances. The first material, (link posted below) edged in brown would look great on my window I think. DH and I love aqua too. We once went to look at a boat and when we walked up and saw the interior was aqua, we just looked at one another and knew we were going to buy it. This is the first time we have used it in our decorating. Well except maybe years ago when the southwest type colors were in. retro cotton fabric, scroll down for photo vintage hip chocolate and brown Thanks for everyone's help. I have never bought anything on ebay before, I might try on that first fabric and see how it goes - I have 5 hours to think about it or I could just order one yard - since it is 54 inches wide that is probably all I would need - or I could get two yards and do a couple of pillows for the family room sofa or a table runner for my dark table. Would too much coordination with the same material be too hokey?...See MoreCindy Curley
