Built ins + Fireplace Design

We are considering built ins on either side of our fireplace and have our builders coming over tomorrow to see what our options are.

Currently, we think we like the idea of having the builtins the same height as the mantle versus having them the same height as the TV. (I know, I know- TV above the fireplace is bad. You win some, you lose some.)

My major concern is this is an exterior wall and that the fireplace is only about 3 1/2" off the wall, the mantle is 9" and the hearth is 18" deep. I'm guessing our builder will tell us that they will be more "built outs" than builtins. Will this look strange if the the shelves are 12-15" deep and create kind of a hole/tunnel where the fireplace is?

Our other option is to purchase some type of cabinet to place on either side and/or a leather chair & lamp on one side, cabinet on the other. We think this may look like a "fix" though instead of going for the custom made.

Any thoughts, recommendations or advice?

(FYI- mantle height: 60", space on sides of fireplace: 50 1/2")
