Entertainment Consoles??
Comments (36)I just picked up a chinahutch . The bottom of this particular one would make a perfect place to set a flat screen on or above. In our area china hutchs are free or not much more than $100 . Expanding your search to include hutchs might be a good option for you as well. I have another much more elaberate hutch so when I saw this one on the side of the road with a free sign on it I passed it buy then though better of it and turned around a looked it over. Its solid oak has a perfect finish ,a very plain square design. I am going to paint the top to match my daughters furnature and it will go in her room and the bottom will go in the craft room....See MoreHow to finish like Ikea's Black-Brown funiture?
Comments (13)Why would someone want to copy an IKEA stain/dye? Well, not to split hairs, but not EVERYTHING from IKEA is pressboard and "foil" finish. They havea line called Hemnes that is "solid" wood (lots of finger joints take SOLID to "solid"). Yes, the backer is 3/16 pressboard, but you can replace that with 1/4" or 3/16 ply and for under $200 have a dimensonally stable and not bad looking bookcase. I am building a combo theater/library in my basement and since 125sf of custom book cases is a bit out of my price range, i reached out to IKEA. Voila - $1,200. That wouldn't be a cabinet maker's deposit for the job. Now why to match? Well, i have a fridge that needs to be sunk into a wall and clad to match the bookcases. So, i need to match the finish. Also need to bild a frame around the screen - again need to match finish. It's not Stickley, and we're not varnishing a Barrel-back ChrisCraft, so give this person a break. Oh, and to answer the question directly - don't use oak, use a sandable and relitively un-figured ply (Sandeply at one retailer) and you can get Black-Brown stain directly from IKEA - ar at least you used to be able to. Oak will look wierd next to factory whitewood peices and won't absorb as well....See MoreMatch cabinet paint color to trim? W/ glaze? No help in Paint Forum
Comments (9)Thanks for the input everyone! We would be doing a similar shade in cabinet paint to the trim paint--both would be shade of white. The trim will be a SW Linen White to match the interior windows--this is not a standard color they carry, it is apparently a special formula they make for Pella (the interior of the windows were pre-painted at the Pella factory). There will be at least 2 places in the kitchen/breakfast/great room area where trim and cabinet would be right against each other, and probably a similar amount of spots in each bathroom. So, I'm thinking from your responses and, given my answers to your questions, I probably should try to match the trim and cabinets--if we do an off-white shade on the cabinet. ontariomom, it's interesting that you feel glaze is not as timeless--I've thought the same thing about the gray, beige, green, etc. painted cabinets that seem so popular right now. My husband and I both really love the weathered or aged look that glaze provides. We did it in our last remodel and were very happy. However, I've heard others in addition to you mention that they feel glaze is not classic or is "out." So, I'm going back and forth on doing what we love (glaze) with chance it may look dated relatively soon, trying a painted "color" cabinet such as light gray or beige, or doing a painted off-white cabinet with no glaze. tcufrog, I'm trying to work with the cabinetmaker to get sample boards, so hopefully that will help the decision!...See MoreHelp! Comments (5)that is a lot, lot of wood! It's nice, but it's just a lot. would you consider painting the window/door trim and the baseboards in white? it really would look so nice, especially w/the pine ceiling and the oak floor. here is a before/after here's a wood ceiling and floor w/white window trim so you can see another pic w/your pine ceiling next to white trim (ignore the coffered ceiling beams) If you'd like to put in a few beams, do them white: (notice white trim again!) I'd have the floors stained in a walnut shade. Oak is beautiful in that coloring and if it's red oak, it will hide the natural pink tone. this tone. If you need to put in shelving, consider something like this w/a black background. notice the white trim/baseboards. actually, if you will be doing flooring, consider removing the existing smaller wood baseboards and replacing them w/the taller white ones, like in this pic above and the one showing the wood floor, above. As for ceiling fan, since you don't need the light, pick something in a sleeker type of fan blade, less bulky than what you have.for the storage issue, I don't know what the budget is, or do you have DIY skills? plenty of built-in type of cabinets you could do. Even doing an Ikea hack w/the Billy Book cases would be an option. pine ceiling and walnut stained oak floors, white trim and baseboards. gives you an idea for your space. nice fan too or, if you had thoughts on painting the ceiling...See Morerobo (z6a)
