Duncan Phyfe Table--to buy or not to buy
Comments (35)Wow! You guys are amazing! I need a bumper sticker that says "I Love Garden Web." I appreciate all your expertise. An update: I took DH to see the table on Saturday The table is in pieces, so we were able to turn the pedestal upside down and inspect them more closely. Much to my horror, I found that several do the other legs looked like they were about to come off or had been badly reglued onto the pedestals. I went running to the shopowner, who calmly said their furniture repair person could fix all of the problems for $200. That would put the price of this table at $500. So no, I did not buy the table on the spot. I told the shopowner that I would look at the table again after repairs. That gives me time to troll Craigslist and some of the many antique stores in the Atlanta area. I went down the street to a store that sells a few antiques, but mostly refinishes them. The shoppwmer there made a face when I mentioned the price on the (repaired) DP table, so I will definitely do some bargaining if it comes to that. On the upside, this same guy said he has 8 matching DP chairs in his warehouse, just waiting for someone to have them refinished. I am not fixed on DP, but I like it better than some other styles, and it would go well with my very formal dining room. I apprciate all the info on veneer--I had very little knowledge, and now I know that since I want a very large table, veneer would be a very reasonable choice. I know $500 makes the table less of a deal, but of couple of things will keep it on the radar: 1) We went over budget on the kitchen, and I'm trying to dave DH some money 2) $500 is still way less that the 1-4k that I've seen these tables listed for online. 3) If the repairs are done correctly, the piece will be stable and strong for many years to come.4) It's big. And right here. Bird in the hand, and all that. Thank you, everyone, (especially celticmoon) for all the pictures. Some of the tables are beautiful, especially tha one with the roping around the edge. Drooool. Off to do some table trolling... oh and I have seen one leaf (the other one was upside down beyond my reach,) but I'm sure the shopowner would have mentioned any major damage. I just wish I knew what happened to this poor defenseless table......See MoreCan a Craftsman Style house have non-Craftsman style furniture?
Comments (4)Absolutely! We are in the process of remodeling our non-descript builder's special with Craftsman details. My dining room furniture is vintage Jacobean repro. The living room holds my vintage/antique Duncan Phyfe, Chippendale, and Federal furniture. I have a Victorian piece or two as well. You don't have to go all-out Craftsman. IMO, that's a boring, predictable way to go. Your traditional pieces will be smashing when teamed with a Craftsman style backdrop!...See MoreHow best to repair antique table
Comments (9)Okay, so the first photo above is the piece that broke off. This picture is the blocks where the glue let go--you can see it looks a little bit reddish compared to the dark stain, adn you can just see the outline of the blocks where the glue failed on the picture above. I should note that the blocks on one side are quite close together, as in this picture, and the blocks on the other side have quite some distance between them, which is the side that you see on the table, hence the wider space between glue stains....See MoreDid Duncan Phyfe ever make anything like this?
Comments (10)Aww...some of the Heywood stuff is really decent:) Its very sturdy. I ended up doing H-W in the bedrooms on a project because it was inexpensive, it went with the house...and it *fit *up *the *stairs 8[ I work in an urban area where there are small stairwells, narrow halls, and (normal IMO) sized bedrooms. My client had somehow gotten a dresser, bed, and night table of 1990s gigantor furniture into her BR and the door barely opened. We replaced it With A HW set with 2 dressers, vanity and stool, bed and night tables, and there was *still more space than before. It is a specific look, but it has its place:)...See MoreLauren L.
