1950s Kitchen Counter Help, Opinions wanted!
The time has come to replace our kitchen counters. I love them (White Formica with Gold Flecks!) but they are cracking where the laminate curves up the wall, staining something fierce and generally starting to look very sad.
We want to keep with the 1950s look, but don't mind choosing more modern materials if the look is right. I don't mind laminate, but I wouldn't want it up on the backsplash area this time. I like the way some of the solid surfacing looks (Corian and Avonite have some fun minty aqua colors!) and I do like some of the white quartz options. I really like the sparkly look of quartz- some of it reminds me of my beloved glitter formica!
I guess I'm looking for opinions- its hard to even narrow down what I'm leaning towards. Our home is very much a Midcentury Modest style, rather than modern and I like the idea of using humble materials. I don't know if I want to go full time capsule either- we did that with one bathroom and will do so with our second- but a something that doesn't look weird or out of place.

Comments (32)We used B&W tile! I think they are called American Tile now- these are the 27S Aqua Satin. The website has their catalog of sizes- they carry a lot of sizes and shapes! Comments (42)for the handles, may I suggest something to pick up on the hues in the flooring? A little more copper toned. you have light cabs, light floors. I think throwing in a dark ORB w/o actual copper highlights would be too much of a contrast. IMO. cypress park Sandra, I like the porcelain one better than the other one. Does the backsplash have to be done immediately? If the tones in the porcelain tile you picked clash w/the ivory tones in the counter, it could be a problem. However, I did find some copper toned ones that should be avail. these are porcelain/SS, and treated so as not to stain or tarnish. I LOVE these for your kitchen. timeless and gorgeous. Comments (5)Wow the black and soft white w the Taj is going to look amaaaazinggg!! I use black as accents in the kitchen as my center island is a deep Tuscany green and cabs are White Duck. I racked my brains for months looking for backsplash and then I remembered in one of my bathrooms I used this oyster color very elongated subway tile with a soft wave. Went out to my storage to get a few pieces and laid it on there and it was perfect. It was this very soft and neutral greige color. If he’ll go back through my old post you should see pictures of my cabinets Taj Mahal and backsplash as I just cannot remember at this time. after the fact I wish I would’ve brought the Taj all the way up the wall but I’m glad now how it all turned out. 6 years agoMy 1939 house came with octagonal tiles for the bathroom flooring and for the kitchen countertops. We remodeled it back in the early 2000s and could not find octagonal tiles anywhere. We ended up using 4-inch tiles in white with black trim in the kitchen. We were fortunate to have a tiler who was as artistic as he was talented. His knowledge and attention to detail made it much nicer counters than the original and much nicer than we had envisioned. As a tip to the modern he put in a remnant of black granite about 2-ft wide and 4-ft long where the counters made an L shape. It was very striking and surprisingly.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoThese are the counter samples I've ordered and/or been able to see in person. Some of the solid surfacing is a pretty sparkly white, and MSI makes a quartz that's almost a dead ringer for my current formica. The pictures from my kitchen aren't the best lighting... but then again, the lighting isn't great in there

I just wanted to share an update now that -most- of the backsplash is done. It was great to hear other opinions and have resources shared
We are still waiting for tile replacements for the last stretch of wall.
we went with Silestone Stellar Snow for the counters and 4.5 x 6” pastel aqua rectangles for the backsplash. We will have it grouted once the other wall is finished. So here are a few progress pics :)
