Advice for a newbie's pathetic looking dahlias?

They've all got buds galore, but of the 12, only a couple seem to be happy - several look rather pathetic, and a couple are downright miserable.

We've had a TON of rain this month, several inches over this past weekend alone. Uncertainty about sun and soil preferences (and procrastination) means they're all potted in individual 12" pots, set atop ground soil or other pots/trays of dirt, to avoid perched water with all the rain.

Reading the forums seems to suggest dahlias NEED full sun, but the tag that came with them from the nursery says "sun to part shade" and the few times I set shifted them (gradually) towards the sunnier spots on the patio, the leaves appeared sunburnt.

I seem to have avoided, miraculously, powdery mildew, which has taken over my squash with a vengeance >.<

Any ideas/suggestions? Light, drainage, fertilizer?

Thank you!
