Gardening in Oz

Can anyone help ID this little fella?

Hi all,

I am looking to identify the species in the below photo. I
purchased a few cubic meters of organic soil a month or so back and since
planting and watering, i have had about 6 of these little fellas pop up and
would like to know if they are a weed I can freely dispose of, or if they are
the seedlings of something else.

The soil was purchased from a landscaping supplier in Greenbank, SE QLD.

Not being a fan of killings plants, if i can keep them and
pot them for indoors, that'll be great.

It's Ricinus communis, Castor Oil Plant. Those first two leaves are what the seed starts with but you can see the next pair are different and will become what the mature leaves will look like. In SE Qld they'll be a weed. I think they also a weed around Sydney. Colder climates they don't get so out of control. They'll grow to a few metres height, flower and seed prolifically, and the seeds germinate readily.

Great, thanks for letting me know tropic, shall pull them out tomorrow. I was assuming they would be a weed, but wanted to be sure.

Wow, Carol Bang on the nail. A very beautiful flower, but what a pity to find it is another of the thousands of alien species we have allowed to go feral. Where I spotted it, was in open grassland, so not too much of a threat to the local flora, I hope. Thanks Fof

Just pull them up - soon, before they seed. Mowing will also keep them in check as will improving the grass so there are no bare patches for weeds to take advantage of.

Thanks! The geranium can stay, but the Menispermum canadense must go. I'm so sick of ivies! And with two small children and two less-than-intelligent dogs, the poisonous (and delicious-looking) berries would not be good.

I broke the eyes apart (I don't mean literally "broke", but they seem to be loose enough most of the time, that they just fall apart once the dirt is removed) and re-planted in the same area, but a couple of inches apart. It gave a "clump" feeling and allowed each individual eye to multiply. Now, after 3 years, I'm giving it away in trades.

As a side note: the seeds are very poisonous.
