Landscape Design around above ground pool

We just put in an above ground pool with a small deck on the side. We want to put some landscaping around the perimeter to give us color essentially year round. We have a 12" ring of pea gravel immediately around the pool with a 2' wide section that is currently edged and mulched for planting. We're not sure what to put and how to put it. We know we want a more substantial tree on either end where we have the mulch bed widened, we're thinking dwarf japanese maples in these locations? What else can we do?

We are in Central NJ.

Most people do not want deciduous trees too close to a pool on account of tree debris getting in the water. Too, the space you've allotted for a tree is not enough. The "bed" to the right of the tree is seriously too small to be good for anything thing. But on that side of the deck is the better place for a small tree. Enlarge that bed substantially and put the Japanese maple over there. Around the pool you are only allowing enough room for perennial. There are many options for perennials but hybrid daylilies come to mind and one of the cheery looking, longer blooming ones.

Thank you. I just realized that I left an image out. I know the right side of the stairs is small. I might follow your suggestion and make that entire side a very large bed for something. I think that would look really nice.

The other side of the pool has a bump out where we were thinking the 2nd tree.

Pool its about 3' high at its lowest due to the slope of the yard. Daylillies make sense. What kind of bush/shrubs would you suggest around the maple on that side?

Make it look natural by having a backdrop at one end of taller shrubs that give the impression it originates from behind them. Natural pools are often wide places in streams or have a stream coming into them from one end. When an artificial pool can be planted so that it appears to have a hidden source then it looks more convincing. The worst thing is the common mistake of a waterfall flowing down a pile of soil or rocks out in an open flat area, with nothing but air behind the top of the fall - completely unnatural and therefore comical and ineffective. However, all it takes is a backdrop of taller shrubs and trees that fill and conceal the space behind the source of the falls and even an artifice such as this can be made to look right.

since you hav ethe rock there, you will need to either continuously pull weeds out, or keep it sprayed with something like round up. as far as the border goes, use a weed eater next time. allow the grass to grow right up to the border, and trim it off level with the rest of the lawn instead of down to dirt. BTW, how wide of a dirt strip is it? mine is about 6 inches around my pool, but that is by design. i do not trust weeding close to the sides of the pool, so i spray a band aroudn the pool every month or so with round up. as long as it is uniform, it actually looks good.

Hi pat-1. I don't have any advice for you, but I hope you will get some responses regarding landscaping. I am having an above-ground pool (30' round) installed next week, and also need ideas for landscaping around it. I thought about patio blocks, but don't know how to lay them in a circular pattern. Need Creative Ideas for Landscaping Around In-Ground Pool

Hello! I'm looking for ideas for backyard landscaping around an in-ground pool. The previous landscape was overgrown and I removed it all two years ago. I left some tall-growing "fountain grass" (that's what it looks like) to cover the fence and two small plum trees. I like the plum trees for color, but the grass is such a pain to cut and dispose of each year. Due to time constraints I limited it to mulch, the plum trees, and the grasses. The grasses add color and help hide the fence a bit, but they don't fully grow until mid-summer and fall over after a heavy rain. I plan on pressure washing and staining the rest of the fence the same color...the previous plants were in the way last summer. Same with the retaining wall...it looks brand new after washing, but I have to do it each year. The tiki bar and fence are cedar. I'm looking to keep the pool/tiki bar theme going so any fun ideas are welcome! The platform for the hot tub was a quick project and I thought about replacing the grass with patio stone and creating a step up to hide the ledger. I'm in Western Pennsylvania. Thank you in advance!

Forget about the 2nd tree in the bump-out. It is too small an area. Remove the bump-out and continue with perennial in a uniform band, or plant a needle shaped evergreen there for punctuation/accent.

In general, most plants require more space than you are allowing.

An evergreen in left bump out sounds reasonable. What low growing items would you place around it if any? What kind of shrub are you suggesting to flank the stairs?

You need some something big enough to soften the visual impact of this installation. Big enough beds and big enough plants - after they grow for some years, at least. But don't plant many trees or large shrubs close enough to the pool that their litter will be falling or blowing into it a lot.

Pump/Filter are on back side of the pool behind the deck. Nothing is being planted near the filter. The plantings will end at the left bump out.

I don't know what will grow best for you in the size of that shrub. Take a look around your town and see what is working for someone else, but would also fit your need. It doesn't necessarily need to be a shrub. Do you care what it looks like in winter? You'll also want to interject your personal taste into the selections. Is there a botanical garden nearby? that would be a great place, since you can see them established, to evaluate plants for your use. Also, consider taking the picture to the shrub or perennial forum and asking over there what might work.

My uncle, who also lives in Central NJ, planted arborvitae (Emerald Green, I think) as privacy screening around his hot tub. They might be taller than you're looking for, but, they thrive in your location. You could also do azaleas, holly, dwarf nandina, lots of things.
