Regardless of erosion due to last 2 yrs drought daylilies are drought tolerant once established. Currently our temps in hi 90's to 101 w/heat index, this does not stop daylilies from producing lovely blooms when mulched. I use daylilies on hills since their roots are deep, their foliage crowds out weeds, looks nice most of yr, very low maintenance, come in wide range varieties/colors -- I can add them to your Magnolia 'Royal Star' when you want them -- by then more of my named daylilies will have propagated so I can offer you some very pretty ones. Hello, I recently read and did some research about hybridizing irises and I've decide to try my hand at the hobby! I'm a huge fan of the flower and I've bought a few TB and BB irises that are already known such as Beverly Sills and Batiks. However, last year I was given some rhizomes by an aunt who lives in a rural town in NM. She has had the flowers for quite some time and had no clue what type of iris they were or the name for it. So I planted them last summer with no blooms but this spring the plant grew admirably large! The largest stock measuring up to 45" and all the stocks had great flower quantity and spacing. The blooms turned out to be a lovely opalescent white with light violet ripples at the haft. The beard itself is a vibrant yellow/orange. It doesn't have much frill at the edges and the petals are smooth. It really is a beautiful surprise! So I know it's a TB for sure but my main question is has any one seen this Iris before? Does any one know the name? I've done a fair amount of research trying to find it and so fair I've found one that comes close. It's called English Cottage, please look it up on Google images and let me know if you think the similarities are a match! I would like to know so I can research the grandparents for crossing purposes. Thanks!

hi i have struggled with the name game.. and have come to the conclusion... that the only SURE way to know the name of a given iris.. is to buy it from a reputable seller.. label it.. and be happy ... the odds of finding the TRUE NAME.. are low to nil.. even with the geniuses here ... one clue ... that i dont know if you used.. is how long auntie had them .. if she has had them 30 years, e.g. ... then make sure you arent looking at names reg'd more recently ... good luck on your quest ... i hope you get luckier than i have ... ken

I find this lovely in May when I used to have to wait for the daylilies close to July. You might also want to consider adding a few of the shorter varieties of bearded irises, as they start blooming long before the TB. My shorter varieties are usually pretty well finished blooming before the TB start. And if you want something earlier than them, consider a bunch of different daffodil cultivars as they range from very early ones to extra late.
