Small white bugs, fast crawlers in soil, please help ID...
Comments (18)Ok, please do not try this without checking it out first. Here is my story. I had this problem more then once. The first time I got these crawly threadlike things in my soil (ie. Last summer), I ended up throwing out my Thanksgiving Cactus. So last November, I purchased a few more Thanksgiving Cactus from the supermarket. I noticed those pesky tiny fruit flies/knats flying around my plants. ( they usually lay their eggs in the soil ) Well that was it! I mixed a combo of rubbing alcohol and water and sprayed the surface of the dirt on my newly purchased plants really well. I have knat/fruit fly traps all over...ie.. Near each plant. For the first time since the Fall, I recently saw the first little bugger and put out my traps. I may do my alcohol/ water spray again. But this is risky. It did not kill my plants, but it can kill them if you overdo this. Proceed at your own risk. Best to try to control this problem. I do not think you can completely avoid it if you have live plants in the home. They LOVE organic soil and there may be unhatched eggs in the organic soil you buy at the garden center to transplant your thanksgiving cactus into a new pot in the Spring. So far I have NOT transplanted anything. Nor have I fertilized anything. These tiny fruit flies/knats come in through screens or with your groceries/fruit that you buy at your local supermarket. They can even come up out of the drain in your sink! I have added photos of these traps. They work well so far for me. You can purchase them at Home Depot or True Value Hardware....See MoreSmall white bugs in my lawn
Comments (12)Neem oil would work, and you can get a bottle of concentrate at Home Depot or any other big box store. Just follow the mixing instructions and apply per label instructions. Safer brand insecticidal soap is usually available at big box stores as well. The concentrate bottle isn't expensive and again, mix according to instructions and apply. There are plenty of recipes online for making your own insecticidal soap, and they do work (I generally whip up my own on the rare occasions that I need one for the cannas). In this particular case, it's critical to use an actual soap and not a detergent--shampoos are a detergent, not a soap, as are most liquid soaps. I'm a soap maker by hobby, so I always have tons of actual soap kicking around and laying hands on a pure Castille soap isn't more than the work of a moment. So for most people, making insecticidal soap is possible and workable (and cheaper than buying it), but not necessarily easy......See MoreSmall white bugs in soil
Comments (9)COuld be anything at that stage, they're usually white because they haven't developed thier outer membrane shells. But it could be anything. Termites maybe? I have a bug book so post a close up and I'll get on trying to ID it for you. Otherwise, use pesticides as a last resort. Know anyone who smokes? Take cigarette butts( 15 or so) or three fresh cigarettes and break them up and soak them in a couple gallons of water( in the sun for a couple days) then, pour into the earth. But before you pour the nicotine, pour gallons of water with 5 or so drops of dishwasher soap into the soil and let it sit. The soap will break the membranes and kill the eggs/younglings, and the nicotine will finish the job. ( This method is safe and organic....See MorePlease Help! Small, white, caterpillar-like bugs. Comments (6)I also spray it with one of the following, not all of them AT THE SAME TIME. Saffer's soap, soap and water with greese in it. Neem oil, Windex, alconol diluted spray, Amways soap with coconut, hair shampoo with coconut oil. ( Yardley's), any brand of Cactus pest spray. Use a new clean pot. Do NOT use Peat Moss in the soil. Make sure the plant is getting plenty of air circulation. My hand hurts so can't make corrections. Remove all dead leaves first. Norma...See Moreplantsman56
