As a climber: Jude the Obscure or Lady of Shalott?
Comments (28)Three years ago I moved Jude to the back of my garden and it hasn't done much so far. But as I recall, it took it quite a few years to show its stuff in the earlier spot it was in, years and years and lots and lots of unplanned pruning because I was always getting stabbed with its vicious thorns as I went by. But it had no disease and was very vigorous. Maybe I don't have the hang of pruning it. To tell the truth, I didn't like the fragrance of this rose at first, although then I grew to like it. I still don't think it is has a graceful or even an attractive habit. It does have that beautiful cup-shaped blossom, but the flowers never open up and develop in the interesting way real old-fashioned cup-shaped roses do, which is a bit disappointing, and they are useless to bring in the house. I am contemplating replacing it with a real climber -- or maybe an elderberry trained as a climber, but will give it another year. Sigh....See MoreLady of Shalott Rose-- bottom leaves curling?
Comments (5)Oh, thank you! Our weather has been unseasonably cool this spring, but not freezing. Wetter than usual, too. I cut off the offending leaves this morning and threw them in trash far away in case of disease or fungus-- I plan to add more roses to this bed. Hopefully some grooming is all it needed, but if not, I know it's a "clean" bush now and can carefully monitor. Of course a picture would help, so as soon as the rain lets up, I'll get one of the plant and post. And if more leaves develop the same problems, I'll get close-ups. Hopefully it's just worn out leaves -- this is my first David Austin and I'll be sad if it has issues. Will see what I can do about a picture this weekend. Thank you again for offering your time and advice!...See MoreLady of Shalott
Comments (24)I can comment on Lady of Shalott. I am in Z6, at least on paper. Realistically here we have seasons that occur in random order. Fortunately, Lady of Shalott is for the most part rather impervious to the weird weather that we get. Same goes for Crocus Rose. Lady of Shalott gets quite large, so be prepared to give it some room. It blooms all growing season on and off without too much fuss. The flowers are not as large or as intense in color in summer heat, but that is typical for roses anyway. It does not have the fragrance quality that Lady Emma Hamilton has. If I were limited to only 5 or 6 of the Austins, this one would be one of them. Disease resistance is reasonably okay for this rose. I find that all my roses need spraying no matter what. It just goes with this climate. Redwolfdoc, thanks for the pictures of your Pastelegance peony. I have been curious about it. I have also ordered a few plants from Adelman's and have gotten nice plants from them. Pastelegance looks to be quite beautiful. Maybe if the price comes down from almost $300 each at the places I have seen it listed I might get one. I have been putting in peonies of various kinds including herbaceous, tree, and intersectionals where I have had to take out a rose that had rose rosette disease or some other problems. Marauding neighborhood deer are also a factor, and deer don't eat peonies. The herbaceous ones are toxic, but the trees are not, and I don't know about the intersectionals....See MoreLady of Shalott grown in a container
Comments (14)Thanks gretahoney. LOS is a fast grower, you should be getting some beautiful blooms this year. Thanks K S. Roses are soooooo hungry. I feed my container roses Osmocote and every so often water soluble Miracle Gro or the Walmart equivalent. If I had the opportunity to plant them in the ground I would use Alaska Fish Fertilizer and real, aged manure or research the forum for Diane in Boise to see how she does it. Kristine. Remodeling can be so stressful. Just focus and dream about what your roses will look like when you can pamper them properly. They and you will be so happy. sun2shine, yes, there is a small trellis I put in with the plant when I planted it. I'm not sure I would do that again. Maybe. I never know what I'm doing with Austins. You can see by pictures above that the canes are getting thicker. I wouldn't worry about thin canes. Here is a picture from last summer that shows a bit more of the trellis. I think I got it from Home Depot. Good point, Cyndita. Yes, I always put a small plant in front of my roses. Not much in bloom right now, normally I would not put that bright yellow in front of LOS. It's an Osteospermum Voltage Yellow, was in a 4 inch pot last year. Putting small planters in front help shade the rose pots, so they don't cook when it gets hot. They also hide the ugly rose pots and bare rose knees and I think they look pretty. Here's a picture from last year to show how I place them. Thanks Sara-Ann. The color is why I chose this rose. Glad it's my first rose bush blooming....See More3xtyr
