Paint help for wood vaulted ceiling

Hi - I am posting a question to help my mom. Her living room has vaulted ceilings and the ceilings have wood on them with beams. It is not paneling. I'm not sure of the proper terminology. She wants to have it painted white. It is currently a darker brown wood color. Is there a "go to" white color for those types of ceilings that will go with existing wall colors and trim? Her walls are currently a light beige (eventually she wants to repaint a light grey) Her trim is a creamy white. We don't know the names of the paint as it was existing to the home. She just wants it lighter and brighter. Also does it work to have a Satin finish? She is in the country and dust is an issue so we are concerned in going with a flat paint it could end up grungy looking and unable to wipe down. Thank you for any suggestions!

I would do a Satin finish on the wood ceiling- sounds like it may be a beadboard ceiling with beams. As far as the color goes, I like Benjamin Moore's Super White as it is very crisp and goes beautifully with off whites as well as beiges and greys. Photos would help!

Paint the end wall. That's actually a very modern look, quite popular right now. People are taking out attics all over the place for a higher ceiling/higher utility bill/less storage. Painting the ceiling and leaving the beams wood is also trendy at the moment.

I'm not a fan of semi-gloss. If there are any imperfections in the wood it will show up. I would use the same finish as the trim, a satin. Use flat on the ceiling and matte on the walls. It is going to be a beautiful room.

In order to get an accurate idea of what paint colors will look like, the swatch process needs to mimic the actual paint process. In other words, the substrate needs to be primed accordingly and two even coats of paint applied within the primed area only. I think the fact that that the swatches are patchy and that they’re running into the previous wall colors is making it difficult to see how the colors really look. But I wouldn’t pick a paint color until after the carpet was in, of course that might not be possible in your situation or your preference. What is the carpet, anyway? And what is the fireplace hearth material (the floor right in front of the fp) going to be?

If you match the color in the art work your husband made you could create an effect of it being organic to the room, and splitting open to reveal the wall behind it. No to painting any of the wood in the room because it all harmonizes with the art work, gives it a reason to be there. Are you planning to do a rug in the room? My living area has trusses with 1x10 pine boards that are exposed. I originally painted them white in flat, since it is a "ceiling." However, about 1 year latter I went up there to dust the trusses and the dust just smeared more!

I wound up repainting everything (trusses and boards) with standard bright white satin from Glidden. I love the glowing sheen. I think satin will work just fine for your case.

If you happen to have pine boards with knots, use oil primer or BIN sealer for the knots. Otherwise, the knots will bleed into the white paint.

Thank you for these response! Sorry for my delay in following up. I've been out of town and also had to get up there to get some photos. I will check out the colors that have been suggested so far as well.

It's beautiful the way it is. I would recommend BIN primer as it looks like there are tons of knots. Does your mom ever sit in the chair up on the ledge?

Nice ceiling. I would not paint it. But who cares what I would do.

Thank you! It is nice, however the room is a bit dark and my mom is looking for a change and to brighten things up. I am not sure if they are Cedar V boards? I have no idea! As far as the little chair, haha no! I think some sort of doll or something used to sit there and nobody has taken it down because it is pretty awkward to get to. Can't wait to see the dust lol.
