HVX strikes at another local nursery!
Comments (5)And then there are those that know about HVX, get told (by me) that some of their plants are infected, then get offensive (toward me) and say they know about the plants, but there is no way of knowing it has the virus unless it's tested, and yet continue to leave it on the shelf to be sold. My mother told me had I not been there to point out that the hosta was diseased, she wouldn't have known any different, thought it was pretty (with the mottling of the leaves) and might have bought the plant. She was glad to have me with her. She knew nothing about HVX. But the woman at the nursery did, knew the problem plants, and refused to do anything about it (except get offensive with me with other customers around after I had been trying to keep quiet about it with her to not alert the other customers). Comments (18)The only one I am 100% sure about that tests for HVX is Hosta Fever in Barrie. I happened to arrive one day while she was waiting for results from a routine test. Hosta Fever uses some American suppliers as well so I know I've got hostas that were grown at Q & Z and possibly any one of the ones mentioned by Vanessa. The other nurseries (Humber is in Toronto at Hwy. 7 & 50, Bradford Greenhouses in Bradford and Barrie and Ego's on Horseshoe Valley Road) that I frequent (since 1980) are huge in these parts, been around for decades and so far I've never had a problem with the hostas I've purchased. I would recommend all of the above based on my own healthy hostas purchased from these sources. I can now add Giboshihill Hostas to my list....See MoreMy first HVX ? Is it !!
Comments (9)Hey there our new Friend from Finland, Please feel free and welcome to use this forum to expand your Hosta questions and to let us know your experiences with us! I, as well, don't think the picture you sent is showing any virus symptoms. My family takes plants that are questionable to an area away from the main gardens and watch it for a year or as long as necessary to determine that it is safe to return to the main display gardens. We will be very interested in having you show and tell us about your experience with Genus Hosta from your part of the world, so please, if you find the time, participate in this forum about the fun, popular, Genus Hosta, from your perspective in Finland ! Thanks for posting, hh (abbreviation for Hosta Hillbilly, my online moniker)...See MoreBell Nursery, HomeDepot and HVX
Comments (4)I would keep them in pots. Don't use any tools on them. Keep them separate from your others. The one you show could be cold damage. Notice that it's on the older leaves. It's odd that it would only be on the older leaves. If it's HVX, it will still have it in the spring. Then, you will know for sure. (I held one over that had a virus, just to be sure. Sure enough, it looked the same in the spring. I tossed it.) I can't see the others well enough to tell. Not every plant from Home Depot (or Lowe's) has HVX. The only HVX infected plants I've seen in Dallas are in upscale nurseries. bk...See Morekay21_utahzone5b
