help with desk/drop zone cabinets
Comments (29)We used Plain & Fancy cabinetry. We have a mudroom with built in cabinets and a bench adjacent to the kitchen, but we actually ended up with a desk in the kitchen. I needed to have the phone, laptop, and drop area there for convenience. It does get messy but it's better than the mail ending up on the counters. What helps our area is a window at the desk. We do have a built in file cabinet to the left, which is great for keeping track of kids papers, bills, etc. I am very happy with the desk. Honestly, though, I am the only one who sits there. When the kids want to do homework they end up at the island. But at least my island doesn't have mail on it! We have a cabinet beside our clean up sink with 4 recycle bins. I thought it was a silly idea pushed by the contractor, but I have gotten to really appreciate it. For some reason, my family had a difficult time carrying the recyclables out to the garage. But they have no problem pitching them in the special indoor bins. The kitchen table is in the foreground of this desk picture: This is a little further to the right showing how the desk ties into the kitchen. The shelving to the right of the desk holds cookbooks. You can also see a tiny bit of the mudroom/bench area to the left where the backpacks end up: And just to show how it ties into the rest of the kitchen with the island where the kids prefer to spread out their homework, this is just a little further to the right of the desk: Hope this helps. Good luck to you!...See MoreNeed help with drop zone
Comments (7)I might like just a row of hooks, and a bench below to hold the bookbags and shoes/boots below. You could put an outlet above the bench on the side wall of charging. If you do want cubbies, howeve, just have two. There isn't enough room for two skinny cubbies AND a bench. oh, and since I'm the one going in and out the most (think about it! Drop off, pick up, garbage cans, mail, shopping, I need a revolving door) I like having MY coat hook handy. I'd have the key hooks on the wall as you come in the garage door, so you can grab as you go...or for when you realize as you try to start the car that you grabbed the wrong key. (Personal experience) I tried putting the family calendar in our mudroom, but found it's best IN the kitchen where we can glance at it during breakfast or after dinner for the day's activities, instead of as we are going out the door when it's too late for making plans, and where it's handy when we are making plans on the phone or online, so we can check for available dates and write them in....See MoreHow to create an entryway w/a drop zone
Comments (4)Where do you drop things right now? Put an official "drop station" exactly where you already drop things. This way you're not changing habits, just the look of it. Where do you take off your shoes? Where do you plonk your jacket when you take it off? Where do you dump the letters? I would have hooks for coats on that big wall, boot drop below. A basket for holding mittens, hats, and boot socks... I have somewhat of a challenge myself, but I'm thinking of solving it with an Ikea rolling cart, letter dump on top, mittens and hats in the middle, trowel and gardening gloves on the bottom....See MoreHelp picking entryway console table and decor!
Comments (2)scaling off of the first photo I think both of those lack the "beefiness" or size I think the space needs. What else do you plan to put on that wall? Plants? Area rug? I think you need to plan the complete look. Is there a coat closet? A place to put shoes etc? What will be in the adjoined room finish wise?...See Morebturner12
