Are your 2017 season plans made up yet?
Comments (32)Hi helen1949, Sorry to hear about the difficulties. How long has it been since you planted the seeds? Some varieties can take their sweet time to germinate and show signs of life. If your current seeds truly are going nowhere, I say it's not too late to start new plants, even for shorter seasons like mine, so I say give it another go! As a bonus, there's probably a good lesson in it for the grandson, about perseverance and trying different things after a failure. Maybe just go to your known and proven methods of starting plants, if only for a different approach. I usually sprout with regular potting soil or pre-start the seeds on a damp towel in a ziploc bag. Just make sure to keep the soil (or towel) evenly moist and warm (top of fridge or similar). If you're out of seeds, getting new ones will likely be cheaper than buying plants from a nursery, maybe just focus on one or two varieties. Heck, just collect seeds from any hot pepper you can get at a store, these should sprout and grow just fine (I've done it and so have others). I hope your hot sauce project ends up working!...See MoreHow to get out Glitter splinters...
Comments (4)@Jilly Thank you for that link! I don't know why I didn't think to search "metal shards." My thumb looks exactly like that! @maddielee They're extremely teeny-tiny specks embedded in my skin. Gorilla tape helped get a lot out/off (and hurt) but it's almost impossible now to see them just looking straight at it. I have to move my thumb side to side in the light to see them shimmer. The pain is much better now after a day and a half. I can apply pressure to my thumb and not squeal. I'm definitely going to try some of the things in the link. Thank y'all!...See Moreaaaaugh! no books anywhere
Comments (32)Aw, I’m betting the op was Going waaay overboard to make the point of her love for the visual appeal of books in the home. That’s me, too. I’ve forever loved the look of bookshelves filled with mostly books, with a few bits of memorabilia or art objects. Now that I read mostly on my kindle and iPad, there are very few books that I buy and keep. But the books I’ve had since long before the digital age are there because a) I treasure them, b) they are first editions, c) I do like re-reading some , like my Barbara Pym collection, that are mostly unavailable now, and some, oh the shame, because they have lovely backs. On the very top shelves are colorful matching editions , ancient histories and the like , never to be read but look oh so nice up there. Also, I will confess that I was once a little judgmental of homes with nary a book in sight...before the internet. That was in my More foolish, small minded younger days. So, that’s my story on having and loving books in a home. But, hmmm, the op may just also be a troll trying to get our parties in a bunch....See MoreFurther to the engagement party - cake fillings
Comments (40)Set about to assemble the cake this morning. I had made lemon curd yesterday and was going to do coconut creme patisserie this morning, but when I opened the can of coconut milk, it looked and smelled odd. Not wanting to take a chance on poisining our guests, nor making the 45 minute round trip to get a new can, I switched gears. I know that I have a lot more buttercream than I need for frosting the semi-naked cake, and I had just purchased freeze dried strawberries, so it will be a layer of lemon curd and a layer of strawberry buttercream. The freeze-dried strawberries have an amazing fresh strawberry taste and don't water down the buttercream....See Morejim1961 / Central Pennsylvania / Zone 6
