Show me your undersink drawers!
Comments (41)You mean, remove the drawers? Hmmm, I’ll have to see if my husband is willing to do that. They are large, heavy drawers. I’ve had several surgeries, and cannot do it on my own. Btw, to accommodate the drawers, I chose a sink with a rear center drain, so the pipes are as close to the wall, as possible. Oh, and two things...we do not have a garbage disposal, so I don’t know what your cabinet maker was talking about. And, it was my contractor, not the cabinet maker, who cut the back panel of the drawer, and configured a notched encasement to accommodate the pipes....See MoreDrawer Front Dilemma-will large drawer fronts warp?
Comments (7)Would it make a difference if the boxes are nailed, not dove-tailed? Because they are not dove-tailed. My gut tells me it should be fine--I never would have thought "no, we shouldn't do that, it will warp". But what do I know, I'm not a cabinet expert. But, this guy is starting to freak me out. this morning, he said again "these are going to warp". He also told me a spliced drawer front would solve the problem. I really hate that he is making me question this, because after all, I am not the expert, and frankly, neither is the KD (or GC for that matter). I just can't figure out why the cabinet guy is saying this and everyone else (including me) thinks it will be fine. Thanks for letting me vent!...See Moreattaching a drawer front to a drawer box
Comments (7)I didn't see your last post til just now. Overbore = slightly larger hole in box so threads don't bit as deep but clamping instead is a far better alternative to overbore. I didn't mention clamps because I wasn't sure you had clamps. Drilling pilots while tape held pieces alighned was as much to alighn pieces after tape was removed as to assist driving screws. Once tape is removed drop small nails in holes to perfectly alighn holes before clamping. Unless clamps have pads, put a piece of wood between clamp and front to prevent dimpling face. As far as pre-drilling particle board,I usually do. Not as large a hole as I would in hardwood but a pilot hole seems to help "unless" pieces are firmly clamped togeather. I still disagree with leaving tape between parts. Do the experiment above and decide for yourself. MDF screw threads are deeper than those on wood screws,be sure to use them....See MoreAllowance for bottom-mount drawer slides: inconsistent gaps
Comments (21)Many Cabinetmakers, including myself, will use jigs or templates when drilling multiple units so you don't have to measure every single drawer, hinge, etc. I've made jigs/templates for everything from, drawer hardware, hinges and shelf holes. In your picture it could be that someone used the wrong jig holes or just didn't think it would matter when initially setting up. I'm sure your Cabinetmaker would be willing to adjust to meet your request. Any good "custom" Cabinetmaker would as far as I'm concerned. If he's not a custom shop, it may be impossible to adjust. He may charge you for it. If he has jigs set up for assembly, and they are set for as pictured, he would have set up that middle drawer differently. I'm not just referring to the slides, this also would be for attaching the drawer front. It all depends on how he assembles. The Blum Tandem plus Blumotion slides are IMHO one of, if not the best on the market. It is true that in order to maximize drawer depth (front to back) you may need to add to the depth. I typically used the 560H5500B which are 22" (550mm) slides in order to maximize depth. Technically the drawer ended up being about 21 3/4" long when using these. Total depth for slide is figured by taking the nominal length (550mm in this case) + 3mm. 3mm being the amount the slide is set in front the front edge. For inches divide the metric by 25.4. I found these to be perfect for maximizing depth without needing to adjust depth of cabinet. However, it comes down to how your Cabinetmaker makes his cabinet and the usable depth of your cabinet....See MoreJill Coopersmith
