A good tile person will scribe around the curves to get a good fit and the grout will fill in the rest. Or you could stop at bottom of cabinet height and then do a center backsplash behind the stove up into the hood between the corbels.

A profile gauge can be had for under $10, add a pack of 2 grease markers to mark on the tile for around $3. Both these items can be found at your local home center. A wet saw will make the job easy and a nicer finish instead of a pair of tile nippers.

It's not hard, but patience is a virtue.

It took me a few calls but i finally found someone that could cut the tile around the curves with no problem. He was worth it. The look is so complete

Mayflowers I totally agree. the creation of the hood was quite a saga and I'm not happy with the end result. I just mentioned removing the corbels to my husband last night and he just about had a stroke...so probably not an option right now!

How much room do you have to tile in the areas marked? I think I might stop at the bottom of the hood on this one.

I used a Stained Glass grinder that had a round diamond coated cylinder to shape curves in tiles. If you are doing this yourself, it may be worth buying (~$140)

Thank you Palimpsest. My husband is planning to DIY with the guidance and assistance of a professional tile person. I might look into the glass grinder. Your suggestion to stop at the bottom of the hood is probably the wisest way to go.

Take the corbels off and tile. Then he may see they don't need to go back on. Otherwise you'll need to patch in the tile if they're removed in the future. They're horrible grease traps anyway. How did you decide on those particular corbels? Are they from the cabinet company?

Mayflowers this hood has been an issue from day one. I didn't ask for corbels and don't recall seeing them in the preliminary sketches I was shown by our cabinet maker. By the time I saw the actual hood they were in place and the other issues that presented were more pressing than the corbels. Now, after living with it for awhile and not having so many other irons in the fire, I am able to see things more clearly. As I said, I'm not happy with how it turned out and am getting the message from my hubby that '"it's too late now, we're not going to change it." I'm not sure I can remove the corbels without damaging the bottom of the hood, although I am sorely tempted to try!

I don't know what kind of tile you plan on using. We had a similar issue. If you are using marble tile, the marble is somewhat soft, and fairly easy to shape using a grinder or file. Just needs patience.

I hate to chime in and say the same thing but the corbels need to come down. Remove them to tile and order the correct size corbel to reinstall after tiling. The kitchen looks really pretty and if you tile around them, you are stuck with them.

I had a few oops like that when I did my kitchen in 2007 and everyone here agreed I needed to change it. Although I oredered the correct pieces to fix it, the momentum was gone and it still isn't finished. Change it now while you are in Reno mode.

I would contact the cabinet maker and ask him to supply the correct corbels. They buy them from a supplier like Osborne. The correct sized ones are not cheap though.

I'm in the no corbel camp. The paneled hood itself is beautiful and the corbels detract from that quality look. A precise tile job over that space seems preferable to corbels that look like a cheap after thought.

I agree to have them removed.
