Stair treads/risers
Comments (4)1. Take off existing treads. 2. put all of the risers on first. Why 1/4 inch? 3. put bottom tread on after scribing to fit (use liquid nails under before fastening tread) 4. nail/screw through risers into back edge of new tread. 5. continue to top one at a time. 6. no silicone. as said above paint won't stick. Comments (2)Peoria, I'm not quite picturing where your problem is--Slateberry's answer is totally different from what I was thinking. Could you clear things up? You say the treads are housed--to me, that means that they fit into the stringer and trim board--your balusters do not rest on the tread, but on the side trim of the stairs in a straight diagonal line, like at the top of the railing. I was picturing the gap as being visible from the top of the tread--that it didn't fit into the trim all the way from front to back--and I couldn't see how the front could fit on every step, but not the back of each? If the treads are open (visible) on one side, with the balusters resting in pairs on each step, then the gap is zero at the front, but wider as you approach the front of the next step, so the gap runs horizontally? It would seem to me that if every step is that way, then they were either poorly done to begin with, or the outside trim was replaced at one time, and the cuts were off....See MoreSeeking advice on riser height for deck stairs
Comments (2)Keep in mind that building code requires handrails if you have >3 steps. So if you go with the 4-step option you'll have to put in more handrails than you're showing in your drawing. With the 3-step option, you can keep the steps clear. I don't think 7.5" risers are too tall. That's standard for interior stairs....See MoreReplacing carpeted stairs with wood stair treads/risers.
Comments (16)Most economical = carpet. After that, a solid finish (wood, cork, vinyl, tile, stone, etc) will require all the extras. Painted stairs will work...with plenty of elbow grease and with the FULL UNDERSTANDING the paint will wear/chip/"patina" inside of a few years. There are ways to lay a runner on the stairs and then trim out the edges of the tread/riser with wood-looking stuff. This will cut the cost in half of what I mention above. The other option is to place the runner and PAINT out the edges....creating a faux-painted-wood look which could be very handsome yet extremely practical. Notice how carpet keeps on coming up again and again? Yah. There's a reason for that. Those are builder grades stairs made for carpet....See MoreRelated Professionals
