My dorm suite had two taps, it drove me nuts.

Different toilet paper? Why would I complicate my life that much lol! And why does it matter whether it's quilted or not?

Powder room. Actually, in our house it's the "guest room bathroom" or the "cats' bathroom" which is a half bath through the laundry room. LOL!

Liquid AND bar soap.

Paper and Terry or linen towels. No one ever uses the linen ones, but they do use the Terry. (I figure, if you just washed your hands, aren't they clean?)

No rug at the toilet.

i do have a canister of Lysol wipes on a little stand by the pedestal sink for quick clean ups on my part.

Hmm, should I put the reed diffuser in there? It's a small room, could get a little intense. I have a scented candle in there, that's enough scent.

dyson air blade? Huh? Do they mean a bathroom vent fan? The air blade is the blade less fan, right? I didn't understand that one.

no mention in the list of reading materials or a book of matches, which mystified me for years in other people's bathrooms. I guess if you have a reed diffuser you don't need the matches?

I was beyond appalled at learning there were people who mixed their tap water in the basin- yuk.

Our house is not older but I love the look of 2 taps and it never bothers me to use both. I don't even think about it.

I don't understand why cleaning supplies would be on display. With closets/vanities in our bathrooms, why put something out that could be under cover? I also hate to see toilet paper sitting out. To me it's just absorbing germs and humidity LOL. And definitely no mats/rug around a toilet. Ewwww.

Bar soap for bathing, liquid soap for washing hands. A hand towel is always out in each bathroom but paper towels (you can find pretty ones) if we're entertaining.

I'm at the bottom rung to start with because I'd never, ever use the word lavatory!

Lavatory? I haven't heard that term used since I was in high school.

Matches are great when you want to mask a smell. We had them in each bathroom growing up before sprays were commonplace (oh, Airwick!!). I love the smell of burnt matches, period.

Liquid soap everywhere. As much as I love the look and smell of nice bars of soap, the mess and film aren't worth it.

No cleaning supplies left out since there's room in the vanity under the sink. Unless it's a hint-hint for guests to roll up their sleeves and scrub some tubs.

I love the look of two taps, but they're a pain to use. I have no yuck response when it comes to filling a sink and washing. Aesthetics aside, I'm even over wide-set faucets and next time will go with a single handle.

I have not read the article, but given my opinion of the Daily Mail, I would be very pleased if my bath were a complete fail by their standards.

My lavatory mainly says, "Get in, get out". I was going to say, "Go in, get out". ha

I didn't read the article, but my best friend has one of those reed diffusers in her guest bathroom and it made me very sick and nauseous when I stayed with her.

On the rare occasion we have a group here, I put out those Kleenex hand towels. We also use liquid soap at the sink but we like bar soap in the shower.

Lavatory means a sink here, anyway.

And i don't think they have exhaust fans.

According to UK dictionaries, lavatory, believe it or not, means toilet. I looked it up in several sources because it sounded so startingly wrong to my ears, but it was coming through in the context. From the OED:

When the article mentioned the Dyson, I think it meant the one like they use in public restrooms that you dry your hands with. I've always wanted an air hand dryer in my bathroom, but most of them don't work worth a hoot, and I can only imagine how much that Dyson one costs.

I only have bathrooms anyway, so I don't have to worry about the terminology. We were talking about U and non-U a few weeks ago in here, weren't we? My maternal grandmother called them "the facilities" if she needed to call it anything, and she really never called attention to having to use them. If she said anything at all instead of just disappearing, she said "Excuse me for a minute."

Of course we're Irish and we sometimes do the Irish Goodbye, which is saying something like "excuse me for a minute" and pretending you will be right back, or saying nothing at all and just leaving the party altogether and going home, rather than calling any attention to it.

"Cat bathroom" lol. Yeah, we had one of those.

"Is there a bathroom I could use?

"Sure, use the cat bathroom - top of the stairs to the right."

Several years ago I came across some paper book matches that were actually coated or infused with incense. They were meant to be in the bathroom in place of regular matches. I bought a few, they were excellent. Never seen them before or again. I have scent allergies so I don't like a lot of long lingering scents. I do usually have a can of lysol spray available in the bathroom should someone care to spray the seat before or after. Lysol kills germs of course and cleans the air.

As time goes by word meanings change. This is just a fact. To be soooo persnickety as to argue with changes that just evolved is plain silly. The quilt/no quilt TP issue until explained will go IGNORED--Why is it acceptable to have one faucet if your home was built after 1980 but not before? Either it is a good idea or it is not. Curious that the age of a home makes something "acceptable". What I learned is why "The Daily Mail" is not well read on this side of the world.

What does my bathroom(s) say about me? Probably that I don't give a hoot what anyone but my DH thinks about how I decorate them and what is or isn't in them (LOL)!

strangely-I'm kinda hitting his marks lol. I just dislike functional things out I guess..and I do like soap bars and soap dishes.

I'm very tidy but not very into all that microbs whatever stuff. It depends on a person. My DD for examply is messy but very into anti microbial and all.

we didn't have toilet paper when I was a kid. At all. it was a deficite or something(we had a lot of these lol, "deficites") So neater people like my family cut newspapers into these accurate rectangles. People who cared less just tore it unevenly.

So,.,coming back to toilet paper. We have some friends who're really big on entertaining. Greatest parties, music, lights change as per what the theme or the music is, throughout the house..

so they're the only people that can have black toilet paper(when one gets it at all?), blue toilet paper, fuschia toilet paper, scarlet red toilet paper..they put it to match the decor for the party..))

the house itself is this chic contemporary, very neutral..they add colors for parties only

Wow, no toilet paper. I have a friend who went to boarding school in the UK in the early 80s. The paper was so stiff that when he was angry with his sister he wrote her a letter on said toilet paper. Channeling Marshall McLuhan at an early age- the medium is the message.

This seems an appropriate place to post this picture I took several years ago in a bathroom in the basement of St. Paul's Cathedral in London. It made me do a double-take. Loo of the Year? Seriously? LOL. (It didn't look all that spectacular to me. Our standards must be different.)

I haven't read all of the comments, but did read the "article" and after having spent a week in a remote part of the world where the humans manage to exist without indoor plumbing, I have to say that William and his shallow opinions can bite me.

When I was a kid in elementary school, we always used the term lavatory, but not at home. Remember those glass soap dispensers?

i think those Dyson hand dryers are disgusting. Have you ever noticed what has accumulated at the bottom of them? All kinds of gross hand drippings. Give me a paper towel any day.

As for what my bathrooms say about me, I don't know. Liquid soap and terry hand towels in the powder room. Bar soap at the upstairs sink and body wash in the shower. Also cleansing wipes for my face. Extra tp and cleaning supplies in the vanity.

Well, I guess some of the guy's terminology can be chalked up to his using British English - we only called it the "loo" when we were being silly faux-Brit. (Which gives a whole new meaning to the song lyric, "skip to the loo, my darling"...)

Personally, I call it the bathroom (even the half bath), the toilet, or the potty box (which I also call the things the cats use - which I keep in the basement). And it's toilet paper, or just plain TP, which I hang UNDER not because Ann Landers or he says so... but because my cats prefer it OVER. And since they don't use the TP for its intended purpose, I've no desire to waste it on them!

Since I buy recycled paper TP, I've never noticed the brand that I find works the best in that category has a quilted option, I stick with un-quilted. I assume it would be cheaper anyway?

No mats by the toilets, just by the tub or shower. Scented candle in the guest bath, none in mine. Choice of bar soap or liquid soap in either bathroom. Cleaning supplies are in the vanity. I'll leave out personal products I expect a guest might want to use: tissues, soap, shampoo, towels.

That guy who wrote that article must be a joy to be around! (Not.)
