Need Help with furniture/TV placement in dining room design

We have the feed from our security system coming out the dining room wall, so my husband and I have decided to put our 60 inch TV on this wall. My dilemma is: should it be centered on the wall, or centered over the dining room table? The dining room table is currently centered to the kitchen island, and also centered through the length of the room (L to R in these pics). We are planning on putting a 9x12 rug under it with the table and rug both centered on the room length (L to R in these pics). I've attached pictures from the sink side of the kitchen island. The second

picture has tape marks where the TV would be if centered on the wall. What do you design gurus out there think? :)

I'd put the TV ( or artwork, or whatever ) centered on the table, not the wall, because that way, the room as a whole will make sense.

Here's my living room, with the mantel treated the same way.

Do you intend to watch TV while you eat? Isn't it too close to watch comfortably with that size of TV? A pretty piece of art work would look better but if you want to, I guess it should be centered on the wall....Just doesn't look ideal to me.

I agree I would prefer the art, but this is a compromise to go with hubby. The mount will swivel for watching from the patio, or living room.

Center the rug with the fireplace. Take the bookcase out of the left corner of the room and put that in the space between the kitchen and FR, where the console table now sits. Move the sectional down toward the fireplace, (after centering the rug), add an end table to the outside of the chaise part of the sectional. Someone sitting there wonÃ¢ÂÂt want to move to get a drink off the coffee table. Be sure there is a lamp there as well, to light that corner of the room. Move the armoire to angle in the corner where the sectional was sitting originally. Use it for storage, perhaps add shelving or even a pull-out shelf for a computer center which can be closed up and put away. The piece is very nice, and gives good height to balance the fireplace and high ceilings. For now, try the console on the wall to the right of the fireplace, and place the new flatscreen on that. Later you may prefer a more substanial cabinet, which can hide other components and store DVDs, etc. If you do that, then try the console table behind the part of the sectional that has its back to the kitchen. Add a comfy upholstered chair in the corner, a bit closer to the fireplace, where the armoire was, along with another small side table and lamp.

I suggest grouping whatever living room furniture you buy around the fireplace. It is what I did in my long living room (mine is wider than yours). Here are some layout suggestions: Before you buy any furniture, make sure you have the room to lay it out something similar to the above suggestions. Put tape on the floor, if you have to and make sure you have enough room to walk around the furniture. You can also try Basset Furniture and/or La-Z-Boy showrooms. They can help you with furniture arrangement and they do not charge you, like a designer does. For the TV, you could either get an entertainment center that will fit right or left of the fireplace or your could even mount your TV on the wall (I have 2 TV's that are wall mounted and I love it). When I was getting ready to move into my house 3 years ago, I needed brand new living room, dining room, and family room furniture. I shopped sales and I found my 2 sofas that are in my living room first at a furniture store selling La-Z-Boy furniture. I got lucky! The sofas were on sale for over 60% off and after choosing them, everything else fell into place. For the family room, I went to a La-Z-Boy showroom, found a reclining sofa I loved, and it was also on sale. I choose soft, neutral colors for it and two rocking recliners. We use this room to relax and watch movies on our big TV in the family room. I also suggest looking at rooms on Houzz and see what appeals to you, in style and color.

I would prefer to see actual pics of the space , a table and chairs there really make no sense at all why not a nice console table with a couple of stoold below it for seating when removing or putting on shoes or boots a piece of art on the wall to the left of the closet and a nice rug.

Definitely not a round area rug. Do you see how Beverly marked off an area for a rug? It is probably a 8 X 10 or 9 X 12. I have a three seat sofa in front of a big window in my living room like she shows. I would just get something darker than what she shows so there is more contrast. Having the same color sofa as the drapes and walls just feels blah to me, but a patterned rug would really perk up the room.

Do you need a TV in your dining room? ;) I would center it on the wall and move your table and chairs towards the windows.

That is why I would center the TV on the wall......you can always move the table one way or the other...

I'm going to throw something out there-- could you make this area a keeping room/den & put the DR in your LR?

Most people love to hang around the kitchen & you could watch tv from your island during meal prep/clean up?

Centre the table to the wall, not the island, then do as others suggest -- centre the t.v. on the wall.

I hope you aren't planning to hand the TV where you marked it. It is too high. The best way is to mark where the TV is going based on your view when sitting. Lower it appropriately from that position. I agree center the TV on the wall and try to move your dining table some where else.

It would help if we had a better idea about the orientation of the rooms -- the space you have available. I agree with those who suggested you consider swapping the functions of the rooms -- make the existing dining room the TV viewing room and move the DR table to another room (LR or FR).

Failing that, is it possible to extend the feed from the security cameras to a location where you would actually want to sit and watch TV?

Failing that, could you purchase a nice tablet for hubby that he can have with him anywhere in the house, so he would have ready access to view the security feeds? After all, I would think the need to view those feeds is momentary at best -- watch a movie, pause the movie to check cameras for a second, return to movie -- right? He's not going to actually sit there and watch the feeds for any appreciable period of time, I would think (although my father can sit for appreciable periods of time watching the Weather Channel, so what do I know?).
