Rain Garden site - Master Rain Garden Class

My hope it to incorporate making rain gardens as part of my water curriculum (I am a teacher). My rain garden site is at my school where we have water that shoots out from many locations attached to the roof. Huge "puddles" are created during/after a rain event. These are the locations that are optimal sites for rain gardens. My students will work together to build (but first conceptualize with my guidance) the rain gardens.

Ann, I'm so glad that you are taking the class! I noticed your name while answering questions but just put it together that you are the teacher I talked to a few months back about rain gardens at your school. Let me know if you would like copies of the lessons I have taught about rain gardens, water quality, stormwater and designing a garden.

That is not allowed in that township. They are diverting the roof and concrete driveway run off but the road run off is bad since this property is a low spot for an adjoining road, 3 neighboring properties and the home across the street. I feel the 'double' catch system should take care of it. The berm along the road will stop a good portion of run off.

Roof area and percolation test.... Roof area for front down spout is 795 square feet. Roof area for back down spout is also 795 square feet. I dug an 18” deep hole yesterday. I was dismayed to find extremely compacted sandy soil, virtually no top soil, little organic matter, not a worm in sight. It was like digging stone. The FIRST fill of water had not drained after 7.5 hours (still about three inches). It was empty this morning. Thinking maybe I was digging into the construction dirt from when the house was first built, I just dug a second hole further from the house. It’s the same dirt! Waiting for the first fill of water to drain right now.
