Sunroom size and flooring suggestions
Comments (8)I would have the size of the sunroom to relate to rest of your house. You don't want the sunroom to be too large in relation to the overall house. Someone with an eye for design could assist you there. We had our sunroom added on 18 years ago. At the time I researched ways to make it energy-efficient. One recommendation was to have tile floors as the tiles absorb heat during the day and release it at night. There are also other recommendations such as the type of windows (we used Anderson low-e) and the amount of roof overhang. Another factor to consider is the orientation to the pattern of the sunlight during the day. We have a Cape Cod style house with the sunroom going off perpendicular to the house at the rear. We have a great southern exposure and I am able to grow geraniums there all year round. Another area to consider is the backup heating for your sunroom if you live in an area where you would need that. The remainder of our house is oil-heated but we have an electric baseboard heater in our sunroom and it really runs up the electric bill. (We keep the sunroom closed off except when we are using it because of the cat getting into my plants.) There are books out there that would address all these topics. Look at Lowe's or Home Depot....See MoreSun-room floor, can I paint?
Comments (11)Jane, I was not attempting to discourage you from painting your floor. I just wanted to share what I learned through my own experience, because you had mentioned that you once considered using tile. Also, whoever buys the house might choose a floating floor and the paint wonÂt make a difference. Although I decided not to use paint on my porch/sunroom, I plan to go ahead with painting the plywood floor in the finished basement. Like you, I am contemplating a beachy (or summery) look, especially since I am on the coast. I thought about a distressed white or a gray similar to weathered shingles or weathered wood (ThereÂs so much of it around here). The patterned floors look great and seem like fun. The possibilities are endless. You can use stencils or sponging. You can also paint a faux area rug. This year I donÂt have the time or patience to attempt a pattern, but I am trying to learn decorative painting and maybe soon I can acquire the skills to attempt a pattern. For now, the painted floor is something inexpensive to go under area rugs. IÂm no help with a color scheme, but your wicker serving cart is great and will probably look good no matter what colors you choose. With area rugs, lots of plants and that lovely wicker cart, the floors donÂt have to be noticeable unless the paint looks really good....See MoreSuggestions for a Gesneriad for cool sunroom
Comments (4)Petrocosmea and ramonda come to mind. Some (at least) of the Chirita/Primulina have done well for me in colder rooms. Heck, my streps are probably living that life too and actually do better for me than in the warmer months. Sinningia would survive best as a dormant bulb at that temperatures (ie summer growing and winter dormant). When Irina stumbles across the thread, she'll probably have more ideas. In my mind the petrocosmea are absolutely adorable darlings, the chiritas have lovely foliage (as well as flowers occassionally), I assume you know streptocarpus already (for their colorful flowers and easy flowering)....See MoreSunroom Design Suggestions! :)
