How to decide between light and airy vs. dark and cozy for living room
Comments (31)Thanks, Monica. : ). Your room looks so homey, and very much like normal life around here. ; ) I was picturing a wall color more like your orange- rust colored pillow when I heard burnished pumpkin. Aimee, it could be partly a function of climate, which might be why I find this to be a challenging decision! That's very interesting that you find cozy colors to be more intimate. I find that appealing, rather than off-putting, but we seldom have "strangers" in our home, and if they are here, I usually want to help them feel welcome and as much a part of the family as possible. Annie, can I come over and stay at your house and see what it's like to live in warm and cozy for a week? : ). I've seen a few pictures of your home, and it looks very warm and inviting. Thanks Lisa. Yes, the little blue library is off our kitchen. The kitchen can just be seen to the right of it. The doorway to the living room is between the library (errr, the bathroom, to be more specific) and the kitchen. Could we possibly get away with a color like this in the living room? This was my absolute favorite room at the home show this year. It's a dark bluish green....See MoreDark Small Living Room - What is the lighting solution?
Comments (11)The tables and blue chair may be darkening the room a bit (if the wood has a dark walnut color to it). How dark is the tan on your walls? Like others said, a photo would be helpful, since I can't really say where in the room would work to put a light. Recessed lighting works well, but I've always found it a bit cold and impersonal. You could use it for extra lighting, but I think there should be a main light fixture that adds character to the room. I don't think pendant lights would look right in your living room. I would consider a small chandelier or a hybrid between a pendant and flush-mounted light. I don't know how high your ceilings are. Also, track lighting which is focused on lighting the fireplace area would look really nice. AND, if possible, a couple electric "candles" in the windows would add warmth to the room at night, if you have a place to put some. Where I live, people keep them up year-round, not just for Christmas. It makes your home inviting from the outside and inside. If you don't have a suitable window ledge, there are some that are held in place by the sash. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Cu5KbEkQCao/TQorZ248YmI/AAAAAAAAAdo/QTi958qgPW4/s1600/CandlesIntheWindow.jpg https://www.irvins.com/product/Cloister-Window-Light/LACT--TNSM--K15-21/ Finally, do yo have any table lamps? Or are you only relying on floor lamps?...See MoreLighting up a dark kitchen and living room -
Comments (10)4000k bulbs don't brighten a room, they shift the colour of the light away from yellow and towards blue, giving a light quality that is supposedly similar to daylight. Me, I find 4000k too cold a light for my tastes. 3000k is as far as I go, and I accept that it means a slightly yellow light. To actually lighten a room, you need more light-- either more bulbs or more lumens (like replacing a 60W bulb with a 100W bulb back when we used incandescents). Some fixtures will take LED bulbs. Others won't, particularly fluorescent or halogen fixtures. Choose the temperature that makes you comfortable (2700k is close to soft white) and the lumen rating (more is brighter) that gives the amount of light you need....See MoreDark sofa and chair for small, "brightened" living room
Comments (7)The problem is that we all want recliners since currently all of our seating space is not comfortable for 4 people. I don't really like the look of bulky recliners, but I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of style for comfort. I tried to go with Lazy Boy duo lines since they look like regular couches with a footrest, but they aren't comfortable nor recline all the way. The current room looks like this. The left wall behind the TV is not done being painted yet. Also, the spot on the couch is the swatch of the color that I posted in the original post. The current couch is about 80 inches. Here is the couch in the showroom: I also considered these: Or:...See Morepavitra_iyer
