Seems to me, the faucet was tightened too much during install.

How long has the faucet been installed?

Faucet was installed at the same time the fabricators installed the counters. GC didn't have anything to do with the kitchen, if I were to call someone it would have to be the fabricator. But since it was installed about a 1-1/2 months ago I don't know whether there's any point to calling them.

it looks to me like there's more than one crack. If that crack is at six oclock there looks like one at 3 oclock. Look very closely to see if there are more cracks. Take some zoomed in pictures.

When holes are drilled in Corian, the top and bottom edges must be rounded slightly to prevent microscopic stress risers that lead to cracks. Looks like the stoners better steal a play from the solid surface book.

Dream:

Those cracks don't look too bad now, but they will fill with contamination and become black unless they are repaired first. What's worse is, if the top has had steel reinforcement rods installed, the sink/faucet water now has a direct path to rust and explode the rod.

Tell your fabricator you'll settle for his paying for Stoneguard. The cracks will be inconspicuous, unable to be felt, impossible to contaminate, etch proof, and probably most important, waterproof.

@ravencajun Zine 8b TX: you're right. There's 2 other cracks. Here's a photo of the second one, this starts by the faucet hole and comes all the way to the edge. I couldn't capture the third one but I can feel it.

I don't think fault has been determined yet. Were this my callback, I'd be looking for impact marks and freshly-changed ceiling light bulbs. Oh, and teenagers. Always look for teenagers.

@Joseph Corlett: No teenagers yet, kids are 6 & 8. No body stood on the counter, since this is a new built, we haven't had the need to change light bulbs. Kids have been in camp from 8.30 - 6.00. We moved in June 14th. Since then we have been away for 2 weeks. So no way its our fault.

Sorry I am right on this one. But that is not a good situation. It will get gunk in it quickly being around the faucet. I would be going over all of that slab with a magnifying glass lol Start with the fabricator and get them to come take a look at it.

No offense, but I've been a warranty agent for solid surface manufacturers. You need a good dose of skepticism to do assessments. They can't be done online. Good luck.

Forgive me if this was already explained and I missed it, but how did that crack appear if it's not due to over-tightening the faucet? What are possible culprits? Could the stone have been cracked from the start? How do people ensure their stone countertops are are well installed and up to Joseph Corlett standards? We don't all live in Florida :-)

Rita - Overtightening of the faucet IS the culprit. Once the additional cracks were pointed out to him, Joseph came to the same conclusion. Joseph thinks that rounding off the sharp edge of the hole might have prevented the cracking.

Ha, we all need Joseph to be our neighbor! Alas...

Well I have the same cracks/ fractures that occurred right after the faucet holes were drilled. NO FAUCET YET. It is Quartzite, beautiful expensive Quartzite. The holes were drilled with very little water and not a s slow as I would have thought it should have been considering the strength of this product. So what do I do? They want to warranty it for a year but the biggest issue is that there is only ONE slab left that matches what we have. We've been in this situation where we bought the same "named granite" a year later and it couldn't have been further from the original. I wasn't stupid, I knew there would be differences, but!!. Now here we are, what do I do to get the fabricator to replace the whole stone rather than fill and grind the fractures around the faucet , a faucet that has a goose neck and will stress the hole.
