Need help with flow from kitchen to family room

Daughter purchased home and needs suggestions on color, decor and window ideas. Kitchen is an open floor plan to sunken family room with a 107" recessed window. She doesn't like the color or carpet kitchen floor or walls, in both rooms. She doesn't like kitchen backsplash it doesn't blend well. She doesn't know how to decorate fireplace wall. Fireplace gold insert will be painted black. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! House was built in 1998 lots of green and yellow which she's not fond of. Thank you!

It's a very nice space. Do you know her decorating style or her favorite colors? What does she absolutely want to change? What does she like? What is her budget?

It's a very open question. It would help to have her go through the different elements in the rooms and identify which fall in each of these categories
- Hate/gotta go
- Don't really like but would replace if I could afford it
- Indifferent/could live with it indefinitely
- Love/never want to change
With an open-ended question, you are likely to get comments from people about what THEY hate and THEY would change, often without respect to budget.

Since you say she doesn't like the yellows and greens, the fireplace wall seems an obvious place to start (the green looks truly awful with the rug). I assume that is a paint treatment, so it should be easy enough to paint over. The moldings look easy enough to remove if she doesn't like them.

With respect to the paint chips propped on the counter, the cooler grays look like they work better with the counter: the two on the right, and the one on the left. If it's for the whole space, I'd go with one of the lighter colors. Though having noted how bad the green faux paint job looks with the rug, you should also consider how any new paint goes with the rug, not just the kitchen.

The plan separates each living space with access from a central hall. It would work well for an office building but not so much for a house especially f you plan to entertain. I find that trying to make a good plan out of a bad one is usually a waste of time and effort. Its like renovating a house that hasn't been built yet. Decide what you think an entertainment space should look like and develop the house around it. But I would not design a house around an occasional use. The interrelationships of family members should be the dominant theme of a house. And I would never put a level change in a living space unless there was an alternate wheelchair route. If you plan to entertain, the front door should have wheelchair access too. An accessible half bath would be good too.

that is a lot, lot of wood! It's nice, but it's just a lot. would you consider painting the window/door trim and the baseboards in white? it really would look so nice, especially w/the pine ceiling and the oak floor. here is a before/after here's a wood ceiling and floor w/white window trim so you can see another pic w/your pine ceiling next to white trim (ignore the coffered ceiling beams) If you'd like to put in a few beams, do them white: (notice white trim again!) I'd have the floors stained in a walnut shade. Oak is beautiful in that coloring and if it's red oak, it will hide the natural pink tone. this tone. If you need to put in shelving, consider something like this w/a black background. notice the white trim/baseboards. actually, if you will be doing flooring, consider removing the existing smaller wood baseboards and replacing them w/the taller white ones, like in this pic above and the one showing the wood floor, above. As for ceiling fan, since you don't need the light, pick something in a sleeker type of fan blade, less bulky than what you have.for the storage issue, I don't know what the budget is, or do you have DIY skills? plenty of built-in type of cabinets you could do. Even doing an Ikea hack w/the Billy Book cases would be an option. pine ceiling and walnut stained oak floors, white trim and baseboards. gives you an idea for your space. nice fan too or, if you had thoughts on painting the ceiling

The key to making spaces flow is to have similar styles and connection with the colors in each space. Your kitchen cabinets are beautiful. The rug in the dining area is beautiful. The sofa and flooring all work together. The table has a country feel to it that doesn't seem to fit with the other two rooms. The art in the hallway is also very country craft, while nothing else seems to have a country flair. The blue gray in the living room is thowing things off. The walls are too yellow and the color of the valance in the kitchen has nothing to do with any other color in the space.The crown molding in the living room is out of place with the rest of the space. I would remove the crown molding and the kitchen valance, paint the walls a light gray green and replace the silver blue grays with green grays in the living room. I would either replace the entire dining set with something more contemporary or paint the white base a dark green gray and get 4 upholstered chairs for around the table. Ditch the entertainment center. It is too dark and massive. A simple tv stand would be better. Now choose a color that you love. Bring that color into the kitchen, dining area and living room with a few pieces. A platter and fruitbowl in the kitchen, some flowers for the center of the table, art, a coffee table book, a vase in the livingroom Add a few throw pillows or a throw. Just enough that the color draws your eye from room to room. When you get new a new coffee table, end tables or ceiling fan, get the same wood as your kitchen cabinets.

Once you take down the window treatments above the sink and by the eating area the backsplash may not appear to be quite as bad. Right now, you have two small patterns literally screaming at one another.

The fireplace wall - is that a paint treatment or wallpaper? Either way, it has to go. It and the kitchen floor are screaming at one another as well, colours that do not go and same sized pattern. And I agree about removing the molding on that wall.
