James, I have 2 in full hot sun, 1 in shade and 1 in morning shade with hot afternoon sun. They all do great. I watered them well the first year they were planted and then they were on their own. The full hot sun ones get huge 3 1/2 feet tall and at least 3 feet wide. Beautiful. The shade and part shade ones are only 2 years old, so I can't tell you for sure if they are going to be huge, yet. Here in Cen Va, clay, zone 7 they die back to the ground each winter and come back wonderfully in the spring. I LOVE them! Plant them where you want them to stay and they have room to grow, because the root system on my oldest one is MASSIVE! It was so big I decided I would divide it and have more plants. I set the shovel where I wanted it and jumped on it and it just bounced off of those roots! Betty

Yep, Baptisia is commonly called "Prairie False Indigo" - according to many places on the web and both my Audubon guide and *snork* Reader's Digest Guide to Plants and Animals blah blah blah... The white particularly. I'm a wool dyer so it's interesting to me as you can actually use it for that purpose - there's enough indigotin in it. Haven't yet, but I keep thinking about it! Just hit that link too, "Desert False Indigo" - that explains it... You know, that legume family is so huge... What can I plant that is deer resistant? This list of deer resistant plants was compiled from Gardenweb postings and other sources. As you can see from the follow-up postings at the bottom of the list, RESISTANT is the key word. Deer can be quite the gourmets and yours may still be partial to some of the plants on this list. Deer that are hungry enough will eat everything bare from the ground up into the trees as high as they can reach. Many of the plants on this list are poisonous or medicinal. If a plant smells bad to you when you crush the leaf or stem, it probably smells just as bad to the deer. (P.S. What's tasty is apparently a regional issue, also, so you might try checking your local (in my case, Maryland Cooperative Extension's Web site) extension service for a list of plants that are "deer candy" or avoided by deer in your area. I've had them nibble on Japanese white spiraea (Spiraea albiflora) and the usual tulip and hosta foliage.
