Comments (12)I also ordered from John last year. He ran out of some of the items I ordered, however, he did not quickly refund me. He told me he would come back the following weekend with the balance of my order (some 15 bags of pine bark, and various bags turface and grit if I remember properly) and then promptly vanished from the face of the earth. No reply to my phone messages, e-mails, etc. Eventually I had to fight the charges through my credit card. It is no surprise to me that his website went down. This year I got my pine bark from Agway and it is pretty good, though I find myself spending a bit more time than I'd like picking out sapwood. Comments (2)How big are the mango trees? If you have to move moderately sized trees in and out every year (as you must in Canada?) then I would suggest you replace the granite with something else. The only reason I would use the granite for a tree in a pot larger than ~8" is if you're worried about it being blown over or etc. It just makes the pots far too heavy to deal with. I ended up using ~1-1.5 bags of the gran-i-grit which put some pots at 75 lbs just for the granite component. The granite can be replaced with similarly sized perlite, charcoal, or anything else that doesn't hold significant quantities of water. Perlite would be the lightest option but you should check to see if mangos have any known issues with fluoride sensitivity (it's only an issue for a few types of plants). If you use charcoal make sure to wash it well to begin with and handle it gently as it is obviously more fragile than the granite etc.. I've used reptibark in the past and it will work - it is probably slightly larger than ideal and it is *very* expensive for what you get. You might even be able to mail order pine bark for less than you'll pay for the 24qt reptibark bags necessary for a large tree......See MoreSubstitutes for ingredients in Al's gritty mix
Comments (40)Lol - because they grow so fast, I use the 5:1:1 mix for brugs & datura. There is no way I would go 2 years with these plants in the same soil. They really need root work beyond potting up every year. Those are also one of the few plants that I give a little extra Mg to - both in the ground and containers (I grow them in the ground as annuals & take cuttings every summer to winter over for next year's plants). The 5:1:1 mix is very good for houseplants and holds up much better/longer than peat/coir/compost-based soils, but the gritty mix would still perform a little better. I always judge what soil to use by how long the plant will be in the same soil. Even though the 5:1:1 mix is much more durable than most packaged soils, I still hold pretty tight to the rule: 1 year in the same soil = 5:1:1. 2 or more years in the same soil = the gritty mix. In the end though, it's whatever you feel is the best choice for you. I'm not selling (you on) soil recipes, I'm selling the importance of aeration and durability in your soils, and showing you various ways to achieve those ends. After I've helped folks understand those points, it really doesn't matter to me what they choose to grow in, though it always pleases me to learn of people having improved their effort:reward ratio because of something I might have shared. ;o) Take good care. I know you'll do well! Al...See MoreGritty Mix - Ingredient Sources - Tampa Bay
Comments (11)Since you're in WC: Pine Fines - Treemart (N. Tampa) Turface - Lesco (WC) MPV, NOT Allsport! Get them to order it.... Crushed Granite - call Shell's Feed Store (Tampa), and ask if they will still order GROWER grit. Gypsum - any local nursery will order it for you if they don't have it in stock. CRF with minors - Helena Chemical, I get mine delivered to my doorstep for no additional charge but that may not be possible where you are. Bamboo Rabbit turned me on to them and they are great, products reasonably priced....Caliber Cote 14-14-14 has all the minors in it and you should be able to get it in Dade City for a very reasonable price for the 50lb. bag if you're willing to make the trip. Odd but they don't stock it in Tampa since that's just their corporate location, you'll find it stocked where the farmers really are ;-) Tom...See MoreKatherine (SC 9a)
