I LOVE wood-look tile in a herringbone pattern!!! I plan to install that in our basement. A few area rugs help keep feet warm. People say a somewhat darker grout than the wood-look tile gives a more authentic wood look than a grout that is obviously lighter than the wood-look tile. Rectified tiles allow very narrow grout lines that also make the tiles look much more authentic. I would suggest getting a tile that has color all the way through so that if it chips there will not be white spots. I've read complaints about unsightly chipping.

Melissa, I agree. I would understand it if you are standing more than an hour at a time or walking throughout your house all the time. But, how often are you doing that? I always use rugs in main areas, and for standing while doing dishes, you could put a mat for comfort. But, really, if your standing, not jumping up and down, how much difference would the harder material make? Hmmm, I wonder if there’s a study done on it? Regardless, I never noticed any pain when living in my tile home (or my wood flooring home). I love the look of wood... but, never noticed a difference in the feel of it. I believe those that have, though.

I can attest to what SJ McCarthy explains: the previous homeowner in the house I bought couldn’t be bothered with taking out old flooring before slapping another down. The flooring was so thick that the counters in the kitchen were ridiculously short, and yes: the dishwasher was bricked in! When I remodeled it took my flooring guys six days to jack out four layers of flooring before laying new tile. When all was said and done I found the interior doors and their jambs had been shortened as well! What a huge, expensive PIA to fix. If you’re not going to do the floors right, please just leave them alone. The future homeowner will thank you.
