Volckamer does well in my hot desert climate. It's very vigorous and will produce a standard sized tree in ground, I have several lemon varieties on volck.

I too have good success with Volk rootstock. Although I've limited it to the main rootstock for my various lemons.

Would the rootstock produce actual lemons? Anyone ever seen or grown any?

So from what I've read, it's the same sort of hybrid as a lemon (citron x sour orange), but not exactly a lemon. It's often described as Rangpur Lime x Lemon in flavor, with just a hint of bitterness. Supposedly extremely ornamental as well. That said, the rootstock was noted as not having particularly good cold tolerance (which is super weird to graft a kumquat hybrid to a cold-hating rootstock on Harris Citrus' part).

I let the Volk get to 6 ft. tall and it produced fruit; they are ~ 2" in diameter. I never planted the seeds. Cuttings of this rootstock rooted rather well for me.

Sunshine how did your Meiwa grow over the past months?

I am just getting home, Susanne and it is already dark. Will post a picture of her tomorrow.

Trace bought a Meiwa kumquat for outside growing in Atlanta (inner city) Georgia. It was to be on Poncirus Trifoliata. They put it on Volckamer and it died in the first cold snap. If it had been on PT he would now have a 6 foot tree.

Steve my meiwa will not be outside for the next 15 to 20 years. After that we might be frost free here. So, temps are no problem ;)

15-20 years. I couldn't be so lucky in my 6b Micro climate. The best rootstocks for Meiwa are PT and K x R.
