How high are the tops of your windows with 9' ceiling?
Comments (8)If they are in new home the rough opening for those windows are usually 6'-10 1/2" but should match any patio doors that may be in that same room ( or they will be off a few inches) Otherwise yes you can move them. You need to know what size structural headers need to go over the windows to know how tall the transoms can be (lvl's are stronger and can be shallower)over the lower windows. Then check what heights are available in the window manufacturer you are looking at assuming they arent custom and expensive. If you should go to 10' ceilings then you should go to 8' int /ext doors and window heads....See MoreHigh ceilings, how do you...
Comments (10)We moved into a home with an open plan and 17 foot ceilings. I can tell you that turning onmy industrial ceiling fans even on low does not heat the main floor,it makes a person feel cold while raising the temp by 1 or 2 degrees. The wind makes me feel colder while the thermometer showed a minimal warming. We had geothermal installed. Which will cool and heat the house. We might add another duct to a colder room,if it also a hotter room come summer. Another more expensive option is zoned heating. I keep a sweater handy for when I go to the basement. The main floor and loft are now pleasantly within 3 degrees of each other. I also leave the curtains open to capture all that warm sunlight during the day which can raise the temp 5-6 degrees in the high ceiling open room....See Morebuying a low ceiling versus a high ceiling house?
Comments (37)With today’s houses being built from 10’ to 12’. The 8 ‘ ceilings look ridiculous in our opinion. My House in Florida has a 8’ ceiling and we hate it even though the house is nice and in a great area. Ceiling fans are too low. We’re always screaming “watch it” when someone lifts our baby in the air. All the fixtures look too low over the dining room area. Someone really tall comes over you can really see how small the house looks. Even the tall cabinet trend makes putting our appliances under them impossible. Our vitamix and Mixer just hangs out in the middle of nowhere, bcause they don’t fit under the cabinets. I personally think houses should be sold in cubic ft not square feet. It’s really not fair to have yesterday’s news gonin the same category as a new modern house with 12’ ceilings. Of course not till we sell our place. :) We just got a new metal roof and wish we didn’t to Raise our roof first. Probably cost a fortune so we’re probably going to have to live with it. I suppose if you don’t entertain or care about those things then anyone can live in an 8’ ceiling house. Knowing what I do now I look right over those houses now....See MoreMotorized shades and color to high arched & low rectangular windows
Comments (18)Lynartist, let me throw another lifestyle issue into the mix. We have two cats that will certainly get hair on the bottom of the curtains, but I can begrudgingly clean those regularly. The bigger fear is that one decides to climb and snags or tears the material. I can only be present with the water spray bottle/cat training tool for so many hours of the day. I do like your idea of treating the area as a whole rather than parsing out separate window ideas. I've been using this site and post to begin learning about options, vocabulary, concepts for these windows. Your advice, and that of others, is greatly appreciated. Now that I am somewhat armed with a starter set of ideas I'll reach out to a professional in the area, but am still interested in getting more ideas. I always content that it is good to be part of a team. Cheers....See Moregforceproduction
