How can I protect my roses?
Comments (5)Don't salt the soil it will kill your roses. Did you put salt around the pot? On the floor? I would keep salt far away from my plants. The rain can make it run off into your soil and you wont be able to grow things for years. Use an organic slug/snail repellant. Be sure its is pet safe if you have dogs or cats. Or any wildlife around for that matter. I had a huge snail problem when I moved into my house and I put a little of that stuff in the garden and haven't had any issues since. You can try a systemic insecticide like Bayer. I know it says on the label not to use in containers but I have used the granular one for years in my containers with no problems. Just make sure not to over do it. Just use one capful per potted plant. The rose takes it in and insects wont want to eat them. Its not legal in the state of NY so just FYI. I would not add it to the soil (ground) if you have ponds or lakes near by. But in planters it may not be as harmful (at least I hope not). Bayer all in one rose care its a fertilizer and insect repellent in one. The liquid one is not good for pots so use the granular one....See MoreHELP! Rose attack: Perforated leaves, beatles, etc.
Comments (25)I've been able to handle my rose slugs with hand picking them off and I haven't resorted to pesticides (yet) so I'm not sure how effective they would be on them. You may not be seeing them because of how much damage they have done. They ate what they could and have probably moved on. Watch the new growth. The first noticeable sign of a rose slug is a very small clear patch in the leaf. It's like the pictures you posted but small clear patches on just a couple leaves. With my bushes I spot the leaf with the small clear patch, flip the leaf over, and the rose slug is usually right underneath or only a leaf away. I also found some ways to control rose slugs. One point it makes is that if you apply the foliar sprays, you have to make sure to spray the undersides of the leaves. Control for the Rose Slugs - 1.) Hand smashing the rose slugs as you can find them on the undersides of the leaves (look early morning). 2.) Repeated foliar sprays as needed, using Insecticidal Soaps or Horticultural Oils, but making sure to spray the undersides of the leaves where the rose slugs are feeding, not the tops of the leaves. 3.) Apply a systemic insecticide such as Bayer's 3 in 1 Rose Care, where the insecticide is taken up inside the plant and the sawfly larvae are killed as they feed on the leaves. Note:) The foliar sprays are usually the most effective and most immediate control, but a combination of systemic and foliar sprays works quite nicely. Comments (13)I agree with buford. A few carefully placed, simple roses with single blooms would look great in a Japanese garden, in my opinion. The first rose I would consider would be 'Mutabilis'. Not only are the blooms right for a Japanese garden, but even more so, the growth habit of the plant itself screams "oriental" when mature. If you wouldn't mind blooms that were a little more vibrantly colored than Mutabilis, I would also consider 'Basye's Blueberry' for a Japanese garden. I mention it also because the typical Japanese garden would not at all welcome a thorny plant. Thorns don't relay the type of soothing flow & calming energy you'd normally want in such a garden. Basye's Blueberry is completely thornless. Randy Basye's Blueberry:...See MoreJapanese Beatles 'Help'

I can also attest to the bags doing more harm then good. they attract them from all around the neighborhood. everyday there are more in my yard from that thing, i began spraying with Malathion spray. knocked them right out but more keep finding their way back, ive got to get rid of the bag, it does more harm than good , unless there are alot ov bags around your neighborhood....See MoreMoses, Pittsburgh, W.
