Name That Plant!

Herb Garden mysteries....

I'm hoping someone can help ID these two beauties.... I don't really know where to even begin, so any help would be appreciated. Both were photographed in the "herb garden" section, so they both have, at some point in their lives, a common use in either food or medicine (or both).... I've seen the tree many times, but never in bloom -- apparently, the flowers start off white and end up this yellow-orange color before dropping off whole. The pink blossoms I've never even seen in the garden before.... Couldn't find the ID tags for either.

If you decide you like comfrey, either contain it or you had better really like it since you will have lots of it!

If I didn't have outdoor space (balcony, garden space, etc.) at an apartment to either have a container garden or to plant directly into the soil, I would opt for a window box. It allows the plants unfiltered sunlight, fresh air, wind, rain - all sorts of good Mother Nature mojo. The plants grown outdoors - even in containers or window boxes far out distance the indoor grown plants in size, vitality, and taste. It is 100% not Hemlock. Neither it nor Caraway has yellow flowers. I have frequently seen the statement on the internet that dill and fennel can cross pollinate but have never read it in any reputable book nor seen any scientific proof. They are in different genera. Intergeneric hybrids are incredibly rare. You might try this question on the Name that Plant Forum. 5 looks like a creeping Verbena to me, 7 looks like a silver or variegated thyme (thus the reason we need larger photos) and I agree that 6 looks like alyssum, 8 like rosemary, 3 like chive, and 4 petunia. One and two don't look like culinary herbs to me - perhaps purple and white alyssum? If you can post each of the original photos in its own followup to this post, you should get confirmation.

Good point babs. My wife planted some 9 years ago and I'm still fighting to get the darn stuff out.

Like with other plants, how aggressively they spread depends on the growing environment. I have one and only one Comfrey plant for very many years, twenty maybe. Hummingbirds favourite.
