Open Concept Kitchen To Family Room Trim Transition

last modified: 7 years ago

I currently have a very dated, very orange wood kitchen that transitions into a family room with the same wood (crown moulding, baseboards, sliding doors, and huge built in). I desperately want to redo the kitchen (new creamy white cabinets, windows, trim and granite countertops) but I am struggling with the trim transition as we didn't plan on redoing the family room, it will be left as is. Is it possible, or even acceptable, to have the kitchen and trim one color (creamy white) and the family room another color (stained wood) when the trim merges from one room to another? I'm attaching some pictures for reference. Any help/advice/input would be great! (We did have a company come out to look at the space and he said that doing one room white and one room stained wood is done all the time - but with such an open concept I worry that it would look funny.)
